This past Memorial Day you might remember that my friend Jen and I headed out to a few awesome garage sales that we knew were going to be going on this year. You know…those ones that never disappoint? 🙂
Well, while on our hunt to find some great new decor for our home I stumbled upon a lonely tiny table that I KNEW would be perfect for the small space under my curvy mirror by our back door.
My new little table only put me back about $7.00! That being said…not only was it painted the ugliest pinky-flesh color, but it had about an inch-thick-layer of some kind of drippy yellow based polyurethane on it. lol…yikes!
So here’s how I took this little guy from drab to fab… with just some paint and a lil’ blue tape!
First I sanded the tar out of that little table with my palm sander 🙂
Then I gave it 2 really good coats of semigloss white. (just the stuff right off the shelf, ULTRA white) After the white paint dried overnight I took a piece of steel wool and went over the whole table lightly, to remove any bits of paint or dust that settled in. I mostly just wanted to make sure that the top, where I was going to put the stripes, was nice and smooth.
After that, I taped off my table top with Scotch Blue edge-lock paint protector tape, by starting in the middle, and then measuring from there out, until I had even lines. Then I took a simple craft foam brush, my favorite aqua paint… and went to town!
I did three good coats of my aqua color to make sure that I had really great coverage over my semi-gloss white. Immediately after I finished my last coat of aqua I started peeling up my painters tape, so as to avoid any dried latex paint from peeling up.
I have to say that I’ve always been a fan of Scotch Blue, but the new edge-lock tape has this smooth, silky texture that you can actually FEEL when you use it. Pretty nifty 🙂
Perfect lines… CHECK!
After everything was totally dry I took my palm sander and distressed the whole table. I wanted this piece to look beachy and worn. I even had my Dad suggest that I take the back of a hammer and notch the table and my “too perfect” hardware a bit to make the whole “look” more cohesive. Genius!
After I had the exact look I wanted I used some non-yellowing clear coat spray to lock in all of my hard work, applied my (now chippy) hardware that I got at Hobby Lobby, and…
ta-da!
I love the beachy feel that these stripes bring into this space. Definitely well worth a little elbow grease and $7.00, if you as me…
because let’s be honest… anything would have looked better then the empty space we had before.
And as far as our concerns with having two pieces of furniture so close to eachother, well… the table is SO little, that we really don’t have any issues!
Now it’s YOUR turn to gather inspiration, have fun, and win some prizes!
