Drum roll please..... It's finally done!
Our once small, useless, overly-cluttered-builder-grade coat closet has officially turned into a functional, prettier, more organized entryway nook!
If you've missed out on our Entryway Closet Makeover journey, you can check out parts 1 & 2 first, to see how this crazy-awesomeness came about!
It's been such a fun, challenging, LONG journey to get from a boring closet with a door that basically blocked our entire entryway, when opened... to an airy, fresh, larger space that definitely brings personality, visual interest and comfort into our home.
I knew that the finishes in this space needed to be ones that could stand lots of traffic, dirt and well... kids! So we decided to paint the beadboard walls with a color called Wood Smoke from Glidden in a satin finish. The trim is just a plain ultra-white, straight from the can semi-gloss. I wanted a higher sheen so that the white parts could be wiped down easily if they get scuffed or bumped by anything.
Pillows were purchased from: Vibe Home, Kimoley Deco, Willa Skye Home and from Home Again. I had my super talented sewing-nerd-friend Katie whip up a slip cover for my cushion out of this awesome, heavy-duty gray circle fabric from Waverly.
I found the hanging star from Joann's and the intricate white frames and organizational baskets (for light bulbs, batteries, extension cords, flashlights, etc...) from Pier 1 Imports. Instead of using the white frames for pictures, I found little mirrors and put them inside. Also, the star came in silver, so I painted it with white spray paint and hung it by a piece of twine.
The cute print hanging on the wall beside our nook is from Brightsides Designs and the frame is from IKEA. It originally came with a cream colored matte, so I used the same Wood Smoke gray from Glidden and gave it a quick coat of paint. That way I wouldn't have to spend money or time on getting a new matte!

I'm sure you recognize the DIY wood crates from our previous tutorial, but just in case you missed them, here they are again! Honestly, these are the PERFECT solution for shoes, gloves and hats! Just make sure that you use some sticky felt pads or small wheels for the bottoms of your crates, to keep them from scraping other surfaces when you pull them in or out.
We always have random papers flying around, so I thought I'd create a little "paper center" for our nook as well. I purchased some of these cute metal baskets, printed out our kids names and a mail label on my computer, mounted them on cute cardstock, rounded the corners and attached them with twine.
We are seriously excited to have this space all done! It was SO fun to design, and I can't tell you how nice it is to have this beautiful nook, instead of a space-sucking closet in our entryway. This little cove is really comfortable and Cason finds me often times sprawled out in it, chatting on the phone or checking my email. I've become a bit obsessed with making unexpected spaces in our home, a LOT more purposeful and cozy.
Over the past few years we've come to realize that our house doesn't have to be the biggest, or filled with the nicest, most expensive, trendiest decor... it just has to make us FEEL happy. And we've found that being more organized, adding lots personal touches and utilizing every inch of our given space, the best we know how...is what makes us really love our home.
Questions Update:
Okay, I've had a LOT of the same questions about our nook, so I thought I'd answer them.
Everyone is mostly concerned about where all the coats went. ha! Obviously I staged this photo so it looked all "pretty", but really, the kiddos usually each have a coat up on a hook, with their little backpacks over it. The other sweatshirts that were in this space just got hung up in the closets in our room :)
- Yes, it STILL looks cute, even when things don't 'match' with the space. (I'll take a photo of that and post it if you all want)
- The kids' snow bibs that we had in the closet before are actually folded in half, and inside one of the crates.
- Gloves, hats and a pair or two of school shoes, for each kiddo are in the other crate. These crates are HUGE, they fit a ton of stuff!
- No, my little kids can't reach the hooks without climbing on the bench. Yes, I'm sure my bench fabric will get a bit dirty. Usually the kids have taken off their shoes and put them in the crate, before they climb up... BUT they ARE kids, and so that's not always the case. Hence the reason that I picked a darker, thicker, more durable fabric! I also had the cover sewn with a zipper on the back so I could slip it off and deep clean it if necessary. (aka: dry clean it)
- No, this nook does NOT always look like this. LOL. Of COURSE there are sometimes coats on the bench, or still backpacks on the floor. We ARE just a normal family with three little kids. Please don't be fooled that just because it looks like this for the 'reveal' photos that it's always this tidy. No matter HOW organized you get or how cool your space is, it's just a fact... KIDS ARE MESSY! :) But at least now having a space where I can quickly put things back in their proper place is really nice!
- Our vacuum that we had in this closet before is now just right outside our laundry room door in the garage. We also built a little shelf out there that houses all the hoses and attachments as well. (I'll show you that later). I liked the idea of keeping cleaning products and 'dusty things' outside, instead of inside.
- Our entryway rug is from IKEA. It was only $20.00. Again, I went with a darker gray, because it hides dirt well.
Whew! I hope I got them all! Really, I just hope we got across that this space was really more of a "dumping ground" then a coat closet, before. Sometimes we'd have stuff in there, sometimes we wouldn't. It didn't serve much of a purpose, so that's why it was easy for us to decide to make it into something else.
If your family uses every square inch of your coat closet for storage, then you might think of some different ways to makeover your space! Maybe you need more hanging capabilities, so you add additional hooks, or leave the coat bar up, don't do the bench, and just make cubbies for storage baskets along the sides or bottom! Really, the great part about DIY projects like these, is that you can customize them to exactly what you need to store in YOUR space!
Wow amazing as always! Such a great idea to use up that space.

ReplyDeleteWe'll be moving to a new place in a month and in the new house there's a perfect spot for a nook like this, so thank you for the inspiration and tips!
This looks FABULOUS!!! Great job :)
ReplyDelete****I know Katie too....She used to live in my ward. Isn't she great and ever so talented!
The nook looks amazing! I wish I had a closet large enough to do this. mine is small a single door and in a weird place so this is one project I won't be able to do but I sure love it!
ReplyDeleteI'm about to embark on painting my kitchen cabinets and wrap my island in beadboard and extend the top with a butcher block counter top from Ikea.
I have to thank you and Jennifer {TT&J} for the inspiration to re-do my house - one room at a time.
~Chrissy
That was a pretty gutsy move. I like it...a lot!

ReplyDeleteHolly @ Lifeasathrifter.com
I have been waiting for this reveal Shelley! This is gorgeous... the beautiful fruit of all of your hard work. Thanks for inspiring all of us!
ReplyDeleteShut. UP!! This looks fantastic! So open, and so much more functional. I think spaces like this are a must have, especially when you have kids. Hanging up coats on hooks is so much more likely to happen when you have it easily accessible too. Well done!!
ReplyDeleteWOW ~ what an amazing difference! I LOVE it all!!
ReplyDeleteThis is fabulous! And I think you are going to get just as much attention for this as your pantry makeover! Just gorgeous! I really feel like the molding on the outside of the door makes it feel like its not a closet anymore. Have a fabulous day!
ReplyDeleteoh my word!!!! I am in love!!! I think anyone who walks into your home will want to sit there :)
ReplyDeleteLove it! What a difference!

ReplyDeletePerfect.
ReplyDeleteShelley!! This is amazing! I have been so excited to see how this project turns out :) I love how you used your crates... they look like they were custom built just for this space! The pillows are perfection, the beadboard walls, corbels under the shelves... everything is just right. I know this is something I want to do when we are not renting anymore :) Thanks for sharing your talents with us!! Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteWow - huge improvement from the previous version. And I absolutely love those wood crates.
ReplyDeleteThis is just gorgeous! I love everything but the little name tags and bins are adorable! I bet your kid love the bench :)
ReplyDeleteIt looks beautiful! I am curious, however, since it's so neat and styled to coordinate with your house decor colors, will everyone be hanging their coats there when they come in? Can your girls reach the hooks or will they have to climb on the nice cushion to reach the hooks? (fearing dirt) How will it look with a bunch of multi-colored coats hanging there?
ReplyDeleteSigned,
Nervous in New Hampshire

ReplyDeleteI am so jealous of your gorgeous entryway! I would love even the tiniest nook to store all of our "getting ready to go" stuff, but alas, our rental apartment is one of those places where you basically just walk into the living room. But this definitely inspires me for the future!

LOOKS GREAT! But who expected less? You so rock!
ReplyDeleteThis turned out fantastic!! I LOVE IT! We turned a closet into a cubby too, but it is nowhere near as charming as this. You've inspired me to pretty it up a bit, but my to do list is so long, we'll see if it ever happens:). thanks for sharing. It really is fabulous!

ReplyDeleteWow! Aren't you the decorating magician? Kudos to you!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness can someone please spell "A.D.O.R.A.B.L.E" --- wait, I just did.
ReplyDeleteShelly, take a bow, go ahead, slow clap it out girl. This is the cutest space and how I wish I had a closet or even the space in my home to do something like this. Alas Florida homes tend to seriously lack in closet space. In fact my new home has...count them....ONE minus the pantry and bedroom closets. ONE for all towels, coats etc. Yes it's Florida but we do need coats.
LOVE this!! -- And the statue goes to...The House of Smiths!
beautiful project!! love the colors! what did you use for the beadboard walls? planks or large sheets? thanks!
ReplyDeleteOh my word, Shelley!!!! What a transformation!!! I am absolutely in love with it! It is definitely "you"! I cannot believe that once used to be a small coat closet. What a statement! I just love it! Nice work!! Did I mention that I love it?? ;-) xoxo

ReplyDeleteI have that same rug from Ikea; it's so thin & light that I find it moves around terribly as people walk over it daily. What are you using to hold it in place?

ReplyDeletewow! It came out great!!!!
ReplyDeleteFitFashLife.blogspot.com
I just have one question, I have the same rug from IKEA so I was wondering how you get the corners of your rug to stay flat? My rug corners always bend up no matter what I do! I used to have it in my living room, but everyone trips on the corners, so I had to put it in my craft studio for now :(
ReplyDeleteThat's fantastic from start to finish!
ReplyDeleteI have a question about your rug. I have the same rug from IKEA, and am wondering how you get the corners to lay nice and flat? Ours will not lay flat at all, the corners always curl up and everyone trips over it constantly! I have moved it from my living room to my craft studio because of the curling issue :(
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing!!! Great job :)
DeleteGorgeous!! Love how it turned, much more functional...grea job!
ReplyDeleteOh my, this look amazing! I love all of the trim detail and the wooden boxes on the bottom are amazing. Great job!
ReplyDeleteMindy - I also have the same rug from IKEA. When I got home I unrolled it and rolled it the opposite way. Then, I had really have books and things on the corners for a loong time. It still curls up a tiny bit but its not tripping people anymore!

Love, love, love it! I too did the same thing just recently, but my closet is a bit smaller. Still waiting for my hubs to finish the doorway trim and then I can paint it. Right now my vacuum(which was also in the old closet) is in the office/everything room :)
