A Sweet Mother’s Day Gift Idea!
Mother’s Day is right around the corner, can you believe it!? I have to be honest and say that I usually space Mother’s Day all together, until the morning of. (bad, I know). So this year I was actually really happy when I was wandering the isles at Michaels and came across this delicious looking cupcake book by Martha Stewart. After flipping through the pages for only a few seconds I stopped on this recipe, and knew that my Mom HAD TO HAVE this book.
It would be perfect for her, since she’s always hosting Sunday night dinners and mini grandkid/cousin parties for our family… but getting a book about cupcakes isn’t quite as fun, unless you actually HAVE a cupcake to eat while reading it, am I right?
So Cason and I got to work…
I immediately fell in love with these colorful, scalloped cupcake liners from Martha Stewart.
Anytime chocolate and candy is involved, the kids come running. This time was no exception. Aubrielle was our helper, and couldn’t wait to get her hands mouth on that chocolatey spatula, as payment for all of her hard work.
Before anyone emails me… yes, I let my child lick the brownie batter from the bowl, spatula and even counter top, if any drips and she feels so inclined to help me “clean up”. I know there’s raw egg, and it’s probably not good for her, but we’re rebels… what can I say?
While those yummy dark chocolate mint-filled brownies were cooking, I got down to business with some of the cute scrapbooking materials that I also snagged at Michaels while I was there.
I was totally inspired by those adorable cupcake wrappers, so I went with a bright, colorful, Spring themed card. Here are some images to show you how I put it all together!
Once those yummy cupcakes were out of the oven, we let them cool a bit and then sprinkled them with powdered sugar. As you can see our middles caved in a bit (not sure why)… but hey, they still tasted amazing! (yup, I couldn’t resist, and took a big bite of Cason’s “test cupcake”. ha! Definitely NOT on my diet plan… but no judging, okay? These suckers were really time consuming and I deserved it. Let me tell ya, it was worth every extra calorie that I had to work off at the gym that next day)
Being the compulsive decorator that I am, I couldn’t resist, and ended up decking out a little cupcake, special, just for my Mom… with mounds of yummy dark chocolate frosting and almonds. We wrapped her book up in some packing paper, (that stuff is AMAZING for wrapping gifts, and SO cheap!) tied some twine around it and slid our signed card in the front.
The girls were beyond excited to surprise Grandma with such fun presents and treats. Yes… I know, Mother’s Day isn’t quite here, but my parents are actually going to be out of town that weekend, so I wanted to make sure that our Mom/Grandma got all she deserved this year, even if it was early.
If you can stand to look past our comfortable and crazy “after church wardrobe choices” for a second, you can see that our cute Mom/Grandma was really surprised with all her fun gifts, brought by some of her favorite little people.
🙂
Are you planning anything special for your Mom this Mother’s Day?
As a Mom myself, I can now honestly say that I truly understand the phrase:
“It’s the thought that counts.”
Cason and the kids could make me homemade cards and breakfast in bed, or shower me with expensive gifts, and I would be as happy as a pig in mud, either way. Just knowing that the people who I love the most, love me back just as much… is more than enough in my book.
Don’t forget YOUR sweet Mom’s this Mother’s Day. Even just a simple card with some updated photos of you or your family can really make her whole day… I promise.

I am always SOO bad at remembering Mother's Day. I like to think it's because I'm not a mother yet myself-but most likely it's because I'm a spacer. I love the idea of making a fun treat to go along with the cookbook/recipe book you give someone! Totally storing that for future use.
See you tomorrow at Breathing Space!

How sweet & simple – those are honestly the best gifts EVER. It's the little things that make the day – a sweet handdrawn card, a few extra kisses, and a little extra time in bed… that's all I'll ever need for Mother's Day!!!

Very cute and thoughtful gift! Now my question is, what materials did you use to make that adorable card?
Lil Mama Stuart says

We'll definitely be celebrating this year… big time. May 13th just happens to be my little girl's FIRST birthday! And coincidentally, my first Mother's Day! I'm feeling a BBQ and backyard fun for a wonderful party.

I'm so with you on the cake mix – one of my children didn't like cooked cake, but would eat half a bowl of raw mix. 😮
But please tell me more about the "stuff" you are pressing into the middle of that mix? What is it? My DS is in LA at he moment and I need a detailed description of what to send him to buy! 🙂 Thank you.

Such a cute post! I'm sure the cupcakes were yummy! I have that book too (although I haven't actually USED it, it was fun looking at all the picutures). I'm glad that you showed how to make that fabulous card…I would not have thought of putting all those elements together even though I have the stuff to do it.
I read your weight loss story on your blog. You have inspired me…I joined a gym yesterday!

Oh my gosh, your girls are adorable. They could probably give dirt to their grandmother and she would love it. Those cupcakes look sooo yummy. And I'm all for trying out the goods when they're homemade. My dad used to tell us kids that he had to try the goody first to make sure it wasn't poisonous. It was a joke of course, but a great way to get first dibs on treats.

What a fun Mother's Day gift idea! The cupcakes look yummy and the card you made is beautiful. You're right, too, that it really is the thought that counts.

I am a mom who let her kids lick the bowl and beaters. They survived as did I . That was always such a treat to get to help and then know that the beates were all yours. I come from a family of seven kids and sometimes the others were too lazy to get off their butts and help but I love to bake so I was in there like a dirty shirt.
My girls are now in their late twenties and both are avid bakers. They still lick the beaters. As do I.
Your mom looks so young. She has a lovely family.

I LOVE cake batter off the beaters & spoon, and it's one of my son's favorite treats! I ate it all during childhood and still do, and have never had problems with raw eggs. I REALLY like your beautiful card – I'm inspired to make some cards for next week's Teacher Appreciation! Thanks for the help! 🙂

I've been following your blog for a while now and I get a kick out of it every time you post something (I also turn green with envy at your DIY savviness, but we don't have to go there). The card you made was super cute – made me think that you'd get right on board with a company like Stampin' Up! based out of Riverton, UT. You seem to be a natural at crafting in general. Great post, as usual!

HI – I grew up eating/licking the spatula, the bowl, the mixer thingy's; anything I could get my hands(mouth) on that had chocolate or ANY cake batter for that matter. Occasionally, I still do and I am (sssh) 53. So go to it girl! yum!
