A Valentine Vignette with Candy Station
I know it’s a little late to share another Valentines Day idea, being that the big day is tomorrow, but I totally forgot to share my heart chalkboard and little candy station that I set-up in one of the corners of my living room!
Better late than never, right?
Okay, let’s be honest, it’s not the prettiest chalk art project in the world, but MAN, this chalking business is not-so-easy! (especially for a type-A perfectionist…whew!) But nevertheless, I’m happy that I tried it because it was actually pretty fun. I’m thinking for my next chalk art project I’ll try out those chalk ink pens to see how they work.

If any of you are going to attempt chalk art for the first time, I definitely recommend watching this little special that Rhonna Farrer did on chalk art tips. She’s AWESOME at it and even teaches chalk art classes here locally! There were lots of helpful hints in the segment that I wish I’d known.
This next little idea was inspired by my cute friend Jamie who has a calendar in her house that states, at the bottom, ‘Take what you need’ and then includes a bunch of little tabs of paper that say things like “peace, love, courage, strength, motivation, etc…” I thought it was so clever, that I wanted to incorporate something like this in my Valentines display, so this is what I came up with!
I found these cute milk bottles on sale over at Down to Earth one day and thought they’d be fun filled with different things that our family and guests who visit could ‘take’! Of course the hugs and kisses are just that… Hershey’s chocolates, and the little glitter hearts came in a pack of 6 from the dollar store.
To make the little sign, I just picked a few fonts out that I liked, typed out the saying, printed it, cut it out and then rounded the edges; then I added some bump out stickers on the back and applied the saying onto a folded piece of sturdy scrapbooking paper.
Easy as that!
Of course my kids LOVED having candy out and so accessible, this whole month (which never happens around here) and mostly because I know a lot of you will ask… YES, they devoured a ton of the candy the first day, I mean, they ARE kids… but after OD’ing on chocolate, they slowed down and barely touched it the rest of the time. haha!
Letting your kids learn and realize that too much of a good thing, is sometimes not-so-good???…Probably not the best parenting technique in the world, but hey… it worked, and they quickly learned that having one or two little chocolates every so often was much better than having a bunch all at once. All things in moderation, eh? ya live and ya learn.
So, are YOU all geared up for the day of love? We just got the girls’ Valentines Day cards in the mail, and I’ll be sharing them tomorrow, they turned out really cute!
Till then!

super cute and "sweet".;) where did you find that cute heart chalkboard? and your chalk art is delightful!
i have candy out for the taking too and it is interesting how the kids learn for themselves, just a bit here and there is just the right amount.

Did you get that lamp shade at Target? I've had my eye on it for the past few weeks, but wasn't sure how it would look on my blue table. And I think yours is perfect so I think I may need to get one ๐

Adorable display. I love all the chalk stuff I've seen but I would be hopeless at it.
But I've yet to learn that a little chocolate is better than a lot… does not compute!

I think that the chalkboard art turned out wonderful. you did a great job!

I couldn't handle a candy station like that. I'm afraid I would eat it all. Hardly any self control here…

You did an amazing job on your first chalk art! Could you tell me where you got that stinkin' cute chalkboard?

Looks super cute Shelley! I love the 'take what you need' bar. I bought some chalk pens awhile ago and they SUCKED–dripped like crazy and wouldn't work at all unless I pushed on the tip and then too much liquid came out. If you get some and figure out how to make them work, do a tutorial please!

I love the idea with the bottles full of candies and chocolates and as regards the children I agree with you and I have to say that: the forbidden is always more tasty! So, if they see them everyday on the table at the end they will get bored of them!!! Good to mention that Shelley!

Very cute =)

I agree with the chalk art, man it is drool-worthy, and yet so hard to do. I hate my handwriting, and get frustrated every time I do one. Yours turned out darling!

Shelley, can I just tell you how awesome I think you are. Thank you so much for your inspiration and continued upbeat attitude. I have enjoyed following your weight loss posts and you have motivated me to become a better "me". Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Hilarious about the od'ing on chocolate. My little sister and I did that we were younger with some very unfortunate side effects. Still at 26 I am not a huge fan of chocolate, and I think it's because of that experience! Ha!

TOTAL cuteness!! I'm borrowing Jamie's idea on "Take What You Need" and am borrowing your Valentine corner idea for Easter! When time permits, will you come over and visit my blog at mysoulfulheart.blogspot.com/ ? Cheers!! Deb Beschler

I actually think that letting kids figure out that there is too much of a good thing at a young age is very wise. The consequences are fairly mild if they overdo candy but, in learning this lesson, one hopes they can make the leap to other more important decisions in life. I believe that we cripple our children if we do much for them, including making all of their decisions. And, your little 'love' station is adorable. Love your blog.

Love me some Mumford and Sons….my brother happens to be their booking agent ๐ Their lyrics should adorn all chalkboards IMO. Super cute.
