2013 Home Trends We Love – Accenting with Animals
Ready for another one of our favorite 2013 home decor trends that we love?
Good, let’s do this people!
In our last post we covered those ‘Out of Bounds Blues‘ that we were crushing on, and in the post before that; Gorgeous Gold. So don’t forget to check those out too.
I’m super excited about today’s trend, because I think it will definitely “ruffle some feathers”.
π
ACCENTING with ANIMALS!
(know that I use the word ‘animal’ loosely. I’m talkin’ any sort of living creature that isn’t human)
Guys, what do you think? Can you dig it?
Well, WE love it!
Truthfully, I think I like it more than Cason, but he definitely doesn’t mind it, so I keep bringing in these interesting creatures whenever I find one that catches my eye.
I’ve found some fun ones at places like Target, HomeGoods, Down to Earth and Joss & Main. I’ve noticed that I tend to stick to animal figurines that are all one color, and cute (of course). Oh, and you’ll also see me doing a happy dance when I find one of these little guys that serve more than just their sole purpose of hanging around and looking cute. Like for example, if it’s a vase, watering pitcher, candlestick holder, etc…
So, without further ado, here are some different ways that we’ve chosen to display our newest animal accents around our home. For those of you who think this is silly (which is the best part about it for me) maybe it will lighten your feelings towards the trend and help you embrace the animalistic decorator inside of you (rawrr)… and for the others, who already love it and just need ideas on how to incorporate this fun new trend into your space, enjoy!
Wooden piggy bowl. HELLO!… how could I resist?
I found this carved bowl in the kitchen section at HomeGoods recently and ironically did a little unexpected pig squeal when I first spotted it. I know this will sound crazy, but the fact that it’s almost ugly/weird… is why I love it more. (?) Don’t ask.
I’m not sure what it was actually intended for, but it’s holding dishcloths at my house. I go through about one a day (hate a smelly dishcloth), so I like having a few ready to go if I need them.
Lacquered elephant bookends from Joss & Main. This duo is one of Cason’s favorites. They’re a bit larger than I had anticipated, but perfect for holding up my Project Life albums on our bookshelf in the basement. I feel like any animal that has a white lacquered/shiny finish tends to look a little less crazy or ‘out there’ and more “on-trend”. So veer that direction if you’re feeling a bit hesitant.
White lacquered owl vase in the twins’ room.
L.O.V.E this piece. It was one of my first, and for some reason when I stick a bunch of fresh flowers in the top of it, it just makes me smile. Tell me it doesn’t look like a crazy hairdo or hat of some sort (?)
My kids giggle at her (yes, it’s a her) every time she gets a new style, and I think that’s what makes her so fun to have around.
This last little guy isn’t actually in MY house, but I used him in a model home I helped decorate for the Parade of Homes last year. This tiny, fragile, simple bird is something I wanted to share, because it’s the perfect piece for someone who is a bit scared to try out the whole “accenting with animals” trend. There’s nothing weird, ugly, creepy or even silly about it. It’s just a classy little creature that helps fill empty space. So my advice, if you want to start somewhere, but don’t think a golden bulldog or silver rhino is right for you… just start small, with a little bird!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, decorating doesn’t have to be a serious, calculated event all the time. Maybe that’s why I’m really loving all the different animals that are available now for accenting our homes with. Somehow, it just makes our spaces seem a little more lighthearted, fun, and not so stiff. That being said, if an owl with crazy ‘hair’ or a wooden pig bowl in the kitchen holding dishcloths seem absolutely absurd to you… it’s cool, we can still be friends.

I have one of those very simple little birds and I love it. I also have two owl vases and really love this trend in general. I'd also love this white faux bison taxidermy, but I don't think I can convince my husband … π

But it's definitely a conversation starter.

I cannot get enough of this trend. It's a zoo around here and I think it's pretty fitting with 2 little boys and a big boy, I mean, my husband. LOL, xo Kristin

I love all the animals! What I'd really like to know, though, is where you got the covers for your outlets and switches. They make such a great impact than regular boring ones. I've seen them in your other kitchen posts, and I've looked through your blog but couldn't find anywhere that you've mentioned them. Can you please tell me where to find them? Thanks!

I love those fancy plates for your light switches and outlets in the photo with the wooden pig! Where did you get those? I also love the wooden pig π

I think the silver rhino would look great on the piano! I saw him at Target and I really want one now….
We've been decorating with animals a bit – my favorite are my white ceramic giraffes in the kitchen – they are oil and vinigar dispensers

I really love animals! I love a sleek, beautiful room, but especially having kids, an animal just livens things up. It makes it less serious. A brass animal in a kids room can style things up, yet in the living room it can relax things. We have a brass cat in my daughter's nursery, a ceramic elephant bank in my son's room, and lots of brass animals in our living room, my favorite is the giraffe. I've blogged about all the spaces recently. Great trend!

I have found I have a thing for fat birds and I have the cutest green lacquered frog that makes me smile when I look at it. The funny thing is I had no idea it was a trend….I just knew that I liked it. I'm loving the white elephant book ends that you are rocking in the basement.

I know you get the "where do you get this from" question all the time….but where did you get the awesome dresser in your twins room? Did I miss a post on this room with all the rad dΓ©cor? I'm crossing my fingers it's something I can order online.
