Elegant and Timeless Girly Bedroom Makover
I’ve got a horrible habit of showing small projects and corners of spaces, but not entire rooms once they’re finished, so I’m trying to get better at that ๐
Well, Aubrielle’s elegant, girly bedroom is totally complete, and I’m so thrilled to finally share it in it’s entirety!
Rug – DownEast Home, from Pottery Barn
Aubrielle loves all things pink and princess-like, so I wanted to make sure that the colors were light, airy and happy in her space, without going full-on character princess… if that makes sense. I love decor and design that can last and grow WITH us, so finding ways to incorporate the things my kids love, but in a timeless, classy way is always the challenge for me.
Dresser – thrifted for $120 and refinished
We painted this room with bright white on the bottom, where the trim was, and Glidden’s Autumn Haze on the top. This is also the same color we have the most of our home. It’s a fantastic, creamy neutral ๐
A while ago I picked out this dresser from my friend Sausha, who worked her magic and helped me take it from outdated, to shabby chic, with light, powder-blue paint, a little distressing and crystal knobs.

Tall Arrows – Fletcher and Fox
The decor on top was mostly gathered from craft shows, made or thrifted. One of Aubrielle’s favorite additions was this Scentsy warmer that puts out little specks of light, that look similar to birds at night on her wall ๐

Crystal knobs – Home Depot & Hobby Lobby
Since this space is really tiny we used girly little accents everywhere we could. These crystal cabinet knobs on the closet doors were the same ones we used for the DIY hallway bathroom towel hanger we made.
Ombre feather print – Zulily
Although small, I wanted to designate a spot in this room to just reading. I found this chippy yellow chair at a consignment store, a rag-tie banner on one of those great deal sites (for cheaper than I could have probably made it for), and stored a bunch of Aubrielle’s favorite books in a blue metal basket from HomeGoods that I found, nearby.
Since we don’t keep any toys in our kids’ rooms, mostly because of the lack of space and amount of clutter it causes, it encourages them to use their rooms as a place to relax and recharge. Playing with their stuffed animals, dolls or reading, usually happens in here.
Handmade doll – Green Stitches, Blue wire basket – HomeGoods
If you know me, then you’re fully aware of how important I think the actual bed and mostly bedding is, in a bedroom. I firmly believe that it sets the stage for the rest of the space.
Bed canopy – DownEast Home, Pink pleated pillow tutorial, Fat quarter pillow tutorial, Jellycat bunny, Polka dot & Pink damask quilt – The Quilt Shop
For this reason, I painted an inexpensive headboard light pink, bought and sewed a “few” pillows (you can NEVER have too many. haha!) and added this whimsical pink canopy overhead to finish off the look.
Photo art – Modern Bird Studios
Because Aubrielle’s nightstand is tiny, but we still needed one, we didn’t want to clutter it up with a lamp. So instead we hung a cute, mini chandelier on a hook, above her bed on the wall. It simply plugs in, and we even rigged it up on a clicker, so that she can just push a button to quickly turn it on and off!
She LOVES it and calls it her “Princess bed”. With the canopy, it’s quickly become one of my favorite places to read books at night too… I don’t blame her ๐
When it came to this space, there really weren’t a whole lot of layouts that actually made sense. At first it was frustrating trying to figure out how to fit everything into such a small area, but once we got the right items, and narrowed down exactly what NEEDED to be in here… everything just fell into place for this girly bedroom makeover ๐

I love it and I have two little girls who would also want this to be their room. You guys have done a great job and I'm sure your little princess loves it.

Absolutely gorgeous! We are in the process of transforming our 4 yr old daughter's room into something a little more grown up… this was partially spawned by the need to repaint since our son found a permanent marker and went to town on her walls (ugh!!). Anyhoo, I really like the neutral color you used… what is the wall color?

Most beautiful room as of yet! love it! love it!

I love this room! I have 3 little girls, so your blog is one of my favotites! Have you thought about putting something above her closet? Maybe one of those signs with a cute saying that you make?

It's adorable!! You do such a cute job…always! Her room is beautiful! I had a question for you…we recently bought a new home, with six kiddos, after 12 years of being married and renting. I feel like it's finally time to decorate MY way!! Haha! I have so many dreams for board and batten/beadboard but don't know where to start. My question is, how do you know how high(tall) to do molding in a bedroom? I think that is what's stalling me on lots of projects right now! Thank you!
Unknown says
So sweet, soft, pretty and Oh' so presh. Well Done!
House of Smiths says
Oh no! Marker walls are the WORST! Make sure when you repaint to use that stain-blocker primer, it will really help ๐
And the neutral we used is just the Glidden Autumn Haze. It's our FAV!
House of Smiths says
YAY! You're so nice! Thanks a ton!

Whoohoo! Your comment made my day!
Yes! I need to put something above her closet and have been thinking about what would look the best. I just want to get the PERFECT saying up there ๐
She used to love tinkerbell, but now she's into lots of other things, so I'm hoping to find a phrase that she'll be able to love, just as much as I do, since she'll see it everyday.
Awesome eye though, you're on the same track as I was. haha!
House of Smiths says
Thanks so much! It totally makes the bed so much cuter, and since we couldn't afford or FIT (for that matter) one of those canopy beds in this space, it solved the problem for us pronto!
She really loves it!
House of Smiths says
Hmm.. I'm not totally sure, because Sausha painted it for me, but I'm thinking it's pretty close to either one of these mustard or marigold colors from her milk paint line ๐ sweetpickinsfurniture.com/product-category/milk-paint

Whoohoo! Yay! This is like the best day ever for you! Your own house and space to decorate has got to be so freeing!
As far as the molding goes, really, anything works. It's sort of personal preference. Most times though, I like molding to go taller than not. So if I want a "mid-height" molding in a 8ft ceiling space, I go with 4ft tall on the molding. BUT, you have to factor in the baseboard and finishing molding on top, which usually brings your overall molding height to somewhere around 4ft 5 inches or sometimes taller (if that makes sense).
If you want to go with taller molding than that, just cut a board and see what looks right! In our other bedroom upstairs we board and batten that was taller (6ft boards), so we were only left with a little less than about 2ft at the top of the painted wall.
Don't let specifics hold you back. Just try cutting a few boards, stand back, see how the height works for you, and go from there! ๐

Thanks Jennie!!! ๐

Haha! Well, she really likes the movie Brave, so I incorporated those to sort of bring in that "princess" theme" ๐
I guess I didn't really mention that. ha!
House of Smiths says
Thanks!!! She DOES love it, and so do I, because it's D.O.N.E! ๐ haha!

Oh my gosh, this room is just to die for! I love everything about it! This would have been my dream room growing up, and if I am being totally honest, would be my dream bedroom now (if not for my uber masculine husband, ha!) ๐ So, so sweet!
Ashley Calaway says
Oh my gosh, this room is to die for! I love it! I would have LOVED a room like this when I was younger, and really, I wouldn't mind it now ๐ (I have a feeling my very masculine husband would NOT be ok with this as our bedroom design, however!) ๐ So darling!

This is so pretty!!! My favorites are the mini-chandi and the knobs on the closet. The tall chest and bedding is also gorgeous. I bet she is having so much fun enjoying her new space! Keep the pretty coming!!

I have used the first picture I saw of her room 2 years ago as an inspiration for my little girls room. I love everything about it – the colors, the design choices, the eclectic mix of fun-glam-shabby-chic. You have outdone yourself!!!
Morgan says
We put a sign up in my daughters room that says "PRINCESS". Then in a smaller font that overlaps it says "daughter of a heavenly king." We are LDS too and I love for her to see that reminder every day:)

So cute! I wish my room looked like that and I'm 44!

Oh this is just darling! There's not a single thing that I would change. I always wanted a bed with a canopy on it when I was little. I love the little wreath in the frame, have you done a tutorial on that? Love it all!

This bedroom is amazing. The colors are so perfect, it doesn't have that over the top girly feel that so many have. I love the different textures you incorporated with the framed wreath too. I really want that Scentsy. Any idea where you get them? Thanks!

Lovely room! And as noted above, lots of ideas for us "older" princesses. My life changed quite a bit this last year but I did inherit an old single wide trailer at the beach. On a lot! I will get to decorate my way. No compromise! And I really like the mini chandelier. Any info on where to buy? Love your blog! You are one of the few decorating, life style ones I follow. Thank you!
