Hardware, the Footboard and a Shrinking Mattress
Remember those gorgeous clear, sleek handles that we ordered from Restoration Hardware?
Well, after rigging up a crazy, scrapbooking paper template/guide to install each piece, we finally got them all settled in on our master bedroom built-in, and we’re lovin’ ’em!
PS: Drilling into cabinets or furniture to make room for new hardware always makes me have a mini heart attack. Ahhhh! Anyone else?
I’m still trying to figure out exactly what I want to do with our DVD player and dish receiver. I think I’ve got a good idea of building a sort of upside down u-shaped platform the TV can sit up on, and then I’ll just put all of the box stuff under it. Then I’ll have two baskets or metal bins underneath, in this open spot for extra storage, and also to hide any cords.
I really like how these straight, simple handles compliment the hardware that we already had going on in the bathroom. I think it looks really nice and helps the space to flow, especially since it’s so small and compact.
And lastly… dun-dah-dah-dauuun! Our footboard finally arrived, and we la-la-LOVE it!
I had to laugh at a bunch of the comments we got on our last post, where we just revealed our striped headboard.
Some of my favorites were:
“Woah! Now that’s a statement bed!”
“Hello stripes! yowzers.”
“Did you think it was going to turn out so bold?”
“Are you worried about this staying in style for the long-haul?”
To answer your questions:
“YOU KNOW IT!”
“He-lloooo gorgeous, ow-ow!”
“We didn’t think… we KNEW!”
“Not one bit! Stripes are classic, and gray is a neutral (in our book anyhow).“
I have to be honest and say that something we DIDN’T foresee being a problem, is the fact that our not-so-awesome, worn-down, 9 year old mattress and boxspring combo would be really low and way too shallow for the beds overall look. grrr.
When we set up the whole bed, side rails and all, and finally placed everything on top of the supporting slats, our bed height shrunk down about 5 inches because we no longer had our bed frame on those raised platform thinga-ma-bobs.
Why is this a problem? Well, check out our nightstands now, compared to our mattress. It just looks… and feels weird. I went and measured my friends brand new boxspring and mattress, and sure enough, hers is a whopping 6 inches taller than ours!!! ***siiigh***
I think I know what Cason and I are getting for Christmas this year. ha!

Beautiful!! We had the same problem with our bed being too low. So we bought an extra box spring and just stacked it up. We covered the box spring with a 2nd dust ruffle and it looks great! I LOVE your blog!!

Years ago, a YW leader told me "The only thing that should be left out in your room is your scriptures." I love seeing the scriptures on your nightstand! I'm no designer, but I think it really adds to the look and feel of your room. ๐

Pretty! We have the opposite problem- our new mattress/boxspring was just delivered this morning, and it is soooooo high! Our nightstands are dwarfed, as is our cheap, mismatched bedroom furniture. Cannot wait to invest in grownup bedroom furniture!

I think your bed is beautiful. I did notice when you installed the TV in the family room (downstairs, I think) you had the wires to deal with. If your can find a friend that is into computers and wiring running the wires behind the wall isn't hard. You just drill a hole behind the TV and feed the wires in and then fish them out at the bottom. I know it sounds good. We still have plenty of wires that have been around long enough that we don't see them any more, but your house is so 'practically perfect' I thought I'd mention it. Your house is beautiful and your girls are charming.

HAHAHA, Shelley! I think what you've just encountered is that phenomenon where you upgrade one thing and then–WHAM!–you realize that you needed to upgrade another thing [mattress] so that it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. And then you'll need to upgrade the bedding because–OMG–you can't NOT have a pretty comforter on a new mattress…..LOL. Sigh…..That's what makes decorating so fun and expensive!
Anyhow, bed looks great! ๐

I'm actually getting rid of a giant sleigh bed because I'm tired of how tiny it makes my bedroom look. I am enjoying my bed being much lower – The empty vertical space also makes my room look larger now. I picked up some midcentury modern nightstands and a dresser from Craigslist so I think I'm going for a little bit of a low-slung, casual, hippie look. Always changin' it up. So…. you can go high, or you can go low!

First off, I love your blog. You inspired our new walk-in pantry complete with a red screen door! Plus, I am trying to figure out a way to incorporate your transformed entryway closet into our home. ๐ FYI…We too were in the market for a new mattress recently. My awesomely, talented husband just built our new king size bed, so we checked out several mattress and furniture stores to try them out in person. We ultimately, however, purchased our new mattress online! It was half the price than what we found at the stores…$579 for a king size. It's one of those memory foam types. I was a little concerned that it would be too firm for me, but it is wonderful! It didn't take any time at all to get used to it after only having the pillowtop kind in the past. It's by Sleep Innovations, made in the good ol' USA, and Amazon has tons of great reviews about it. We purchased ours from Wal-mart (surprisingly) because it was the same price, free shipping, and if it didn't work out, we could always return it to the store. I can only imagine the nightmare it would be to try to return a mattress to Amazon. Anyway, we've had ours for a week, we absolutely love it, and couldn't be happier. Just thought I'd share since you will be on the hunt for one yourself soon. Happy shopping!
