Refocusing + A Trip to Cali & Remembering Wini
I miss posting about day to day stuff and feelings like I used to. Believe it or not, it’s the whole reason I started blogging in the first place. I know I’m gonna sound like a total blogging Granny when I say this, but remember the simpler times? You know, before Pinterest, the great Facebook explosion happened, and social media-money-making-crazies ever really existed? When people actually READ blog posts, instead of just skimming through them quickly, looking for the “next big/best/cool thing” and pretty pin-able image?
*sighhh*
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE working with other bloggers and amazing companies, that will never change, but the crazy amount of pressure, emails and demand to have a specific response to a post or number of repinned images, likes or shares when just simply trying to write about something I feel strongly about… has slowly killed my passion for blogging AND reading others’ blogs.
Like I said before in this post:
“I’ve determined that it’s easy for me to be the girl with lots on my plate, mind and to-do list; but not-so-easy to be the one who says “no” to people or “thanks, but no thanks” when opportunities arise. While progression in life is a must, the pace at which you choose to take it can either help you grow, or quickly have you putting into perspective what and who, matters the most.”

I've been a consistent reader for a long time, and I love what you do here- but this post made me comment for the first time. Firstly, CONGRATULATIONS! Secondly, you *deserve* to do what makes you happy, what makes your family happy, and what makes all of you have time and energy to appreciate your blessings and love. Keep being awesome(r)!

Beautifully said Shelley, and with no apologies. Because you shouldn't apologize for realizing what's most important to you. Hugs and may blessings abound you this year. ๐

Good for you. I am happy you saw it coming and are reacting to it. Know that the reader isn't blind. I lost interest in many blogs because they deviate from the reason why I started to read them at the beginning. They became such a business, nothing genuine anymore. Behind each post, I can feel stress, deadline, projects that are shown just to fill in. I am sorry to se bloggers think they can manipulated their readers like that. You're doing the right think and I'll be happy to see the changes in your posts.

I appreciate this post so much Shelly. It mirrors many of my own sentiments… And I don't nearly have the blog following that you do! I do work full-time though and I was finding that my weekends were spent doing projects, taking and editing pics, posting, and then linking up to other blogs to generate traffic, rather than making memories with my girls. Boy were my priorities off!
I've taken a small sabbatical as well and it's been refreshing. I'm still doing crafty things and decorating my home, but I'm not as dead set to blog about it all. It's been wonderful.
Enjoy your life and post when you want to… Not when you feel you have to.
Mwah!

Good for you! Can't wait to hear more about real life! :).

Oh Shelly I could have written this post! I've been feeling the exact same way for the last few months….I think Pinterest has killed our passion for blogging……I think it's that way for a lot of us who were around and blogging before Pinterest.
Yay for you for doing what your gut told you to do!!

It's amazing what we come to realize when we step back and really take a good hard look at our lives. What we thought was important truly isn't. I had the same type of realization this past year in my own life and had to make changes as well. Although some of the choices I had to make were not what I would have really wanted, they were choices that were needed. For the longest time I felt guilty for stepping away from doing some of them, but I found that I had become so unhappy in my life that it was the only way to find "me" again. And you know what? It turned out to be okay. I AM finding me again, slowly albeit, but she's in there and is started to show through a little more each day. To be honest, I had stopped reading your blog because of the exact reasons you mentioned…it had become too media frenzied and was no longer "you." This particular post instantly drew me back (although it was the pretty picture that really grabbed my attention at first) because it was "you" again. Welcome back!
Ramona says
Amen sister! I applaud you for realizing it and taking action!! Good for you.

I personally prefer blogs like this one today. Don't get me wrong… It was probably pinterest that brought me… But it's getting to know the person behind the screen, so that they feel like a friend and not a "character in a
diy show" that keeps me hanging around and reading.
Unknown says
Great for you! While I always love a good HoS home update, you're inspiring no matter what you do. Live your life. ๐
Unknown says
I am always so happy to see an update from you. I truly enjoy your blog and although I love pinterest and all the pretty pictures, I have found that the blogs that I consistently read have voices and messages behind them that I enjoy. I have always loved your "voice". Looking forward to reading as you move ahead!
Lindsay says
I love this. I love your projects, and am so inspired by them, but I truly love the little glimpses into everyday life on the blog too! Welcome back. :).

I don't think there is a woman alive who doesn't have to re-evaluate her priorities. I distinctly remember a time when my sweet husband took my shoulders, looked me in the eyes and said, "please learn to say no." There is an old saying, "I'm on the way out the door to do one more good thing for people I don't know all the while stepping over my family and friends to get it done." Ouch! So, good for you for finding your balance and renewing your passions I believe in doing so your joy will return in the process. Blessings to you!
Tammy says
Thank you for this post. I came to a similar conclusion, about Facebook, in February. I spent so much time looking at the screen, reading about what everyone else was doing in their lives and began to lose sight of what what I was doing. I started with Facebook to uplift people who were having bad days, reach out to those in need, touch base with those who seemed friendless. Despite my nobel intentions, I began to realize that this virtual world of Facebook was just that, virtual. I was beginning to think Facebook more and more. The kids would do something cute and I would think, I need to post this on Facebook. I would think of a funny line and think, Facebook post. I would be out on an adventure with my family and think I need to post these photos on Facebook. I began to compare my life and activities to my Facebook friends…not healthy. So I turned off Facebook nearly a year ago. For me, complete disconnect from the virtual social world is what I needed. I love your Ferris Bueller quote. It's very true. I off to do that right now…look around. : )
Lisa says
Shelly, I am so happy that you have been able to re-focus and have found your "happy place" again. I wish you the best in this! <3
Jessica and Aaron says
Love this! I blog too, in a very meager way compared to you, but I've been feeling the same thing. For me, it turned into a big comparison, a race. I had to have these posts that would have pinable images and extraordinary content. And that gets so tiring. It's draining. And it wasn't the original intent of my blog. Good for you for stepping back and gaining a little clarity. I love that your word this year is still. I chose focus. Because I need to learn to focus on the rocks that fill my jar and not the sand. They are the important things. So sorry for the loss of your Grandma. Grandma's a great people.
hynote says
I can so relate! My husband and I both found ourselves exhausted at year end thru all our activities of last year that kept us running till our motors were practically burned out……although it was for a very good cause and dear to our hearts, we had to make the decision starting in January to scale back on those extra activities and focus on home life and balance between. It is hard to say no when you see things that need to be done but sometimes we just have to learn to do it!! Thanks for sharing your thoughts…life is short and we do need to make sure we live it and not let it pass us by in being busy, even for something important.
The Clines says
Good for you! You should blog about what YOU want to blog about! So sorry about your step-grandma.

Thank you so much for sharing! My word of the year for 2014 is Intentional because I was realizing that I was just plowing through life without even thinking about what I was doing or how I was valuing what was in my life. This year I am all about being intentional about how I spend my time, talent, energy, resources, etc and I absolutely loved when you said, "sitting in front of my computer less, and spending WAY MORE time caring about and cultivating relationships with my Savoir, family and few close friends, than I will with any new projects, crafts, room designs or blog posts." …That's what life is all about and I love that!
Brad Cowan says
This might just be my favorite post of yours! I blog for me and for my family and to document the memories we're making… I have to remind myself of that almost daily, I should probably write it down and frame it somewhere because it's so easy to get swept up in the current of social media and everything else you mentioned that the real purpose of this whole blogging adventure can get lost.

Good for you! As a reader, I have also noticed the change to more commercialized blogs, more sponsored posts, and a bit of a frenzy to always have something new and cute to blog about…and as a result, I have stopped reading some of my favorite blogs. I think I relate to the bloggers less, because their lives and homes seem so far removed from mine. Anyway, have fun, enjoy the break, and blog about what is meaningful to you:)
Jay says
Amen! Good for you! And I will lovingly read your blog everyday!!

This is a great post! And very timely, I think. At least for me. I'm not a blogger! I'm a reader of blogs. Mostly a skimmer of blogs-exactly as you described. Reading too many blogs doesn't afford anyone the time to get to really read all the blogs. I'm not a "commenter" either.
But this year I have made the resolution or determination to slow down and be mindful of all the day to day experiences of my life instead of rushing through them. Too delete a lot of the noise of life. Too really assess what I'm letting into my life and my mind, my heart, my soul. So, your post today is aligned with my own thoughts on going forward in 2014. Thank you for posting this one!
Kari Maddox says
I'm excited to read the day to day stuff! I read a lot of blogs and enjoy hearing about families…or what you made for dinner or what's the plan for today. Sometimes when I read your blog, I skim a design lesson, because I just want to hear about the girls or husband or life in general. Excited to still read!

I'm so glad you're finding your way back on your own terms, girl! Just so you know…the readers can tell when you're burnt out. That photo of you primping in Cason's sunglasses is easily one of the best photos EVER. lol Love it!

I started reading your blog because of the old posts you did that were fun and silly and had a project or two thrown in. I've missed that so I, for one, will be happy to see you return to those things that make you happy.

I have been reading blogs for the past 6 years and have noticed a HUGE change in the "content"….. Heck it's now referred to as "content" remember when it was just "sharing your thoughts" ๐
Blogs have become mini magazines…..with daily post (or sometimes multiple times per day) partnerships with brands, ebooks etc, which is great…..but actual magazines have TEAMS of people and only publish monthly or even bi-monthly…..why has blogging become such a high pressured "business"? I do understand that lots of bloggers actual are running a business……but should every blog have that be the end goal…..can't we just share our day……and not try and get click thrus to our affiliate links ๐
I am glad to hear you will be sharing more of your everyday…….maybe it will inspire others to take off the blogging pressure and bring back the enjoyment blogging use to give them!
Ps: you look just like your grandmother, beautiful!

I think readers and fellow bloggers like myself are more interested in the people and lives of all of you rather than just a pretty living room set up. Don't get me wrong, I love reading decorating magazines just like anyone else but I want to know that there are real women like me who have real day to day struggles. Your blog is one of those that I love. A real family, living in a real home, albeit a gorgeous one, but one that you created out of the love you have for the people you share it with.
Unknown says
Amen! Good for you! You are soo very right about the "rat race" called life. Ultimately the things that matter the most in life is your relationship with the Savior, you, your family and friends. Time does not stand still for anything, so all you can do is enjoy every little moment of it.
Sheri says
I love reading your blog, from your gorgeous house to your fitness goals. You are inspiring as a mom, a crafter, a decorator and just as a good woman! I will keep reading no matter what.

I am SOOOOOO happy you wrote this!! There are SO many bloggers that I started following way back in the day because I loved their personal posts about family and such – but then they got so focused on the business side of things and became so intent on only blogging the stuff about design, their house, decorating, etc that I lost interest! I have stopped following several blogs who I used to love 'before they were famous'. Glad to see you are bringing it back around to the important stuff in life! =)

You are the sweetest thing ever and I for one will follow your blog no matter what… I started following your blog because I loved the mix of day to day content as well as your projects and DIY ideas. Stories about the girls, and the ups and downs of life and parenting is priceless to me and i'm thrilled to see more of that here. Keep up the great work. You Rock!

Good for you. I love all of your posts so look forward to whatever you want to write about… whenever you want to do it ๐ And I read all the words too (call me 'old school). No seriously, good for you. I'm happy that you are listening to yourself and doing what is best for YOU. xo

I actually love the blogs where you talk about your life and your feelings more than the house ones (although I love those too). But for me, you're very relatable.

Oh it's so good to see you back. I love your blog, no matter what you are writing about, because you use such an easy, readable style. I love reading about your gorgeous girlies, and you and your (really cute – can I say that? lol) hubby. I love reading and getting inspiration from your home decorating posts. But whatever you want to write about is good with me, so long as it's good with you and fits in with your lovely family.

Shelley! I could not agree with you more. That is exactly while I haven't blogged in 2 years. The fun part of just sharing my home, family and ideas became work and I didn't enjoy it anymore. More and more my feelings of refocusing have truly been on my mind and trying to shut down the silliness of having a perfect Pinterest home. I love having a nice home, don't get me wrong…it makes me happy but I've realized that IT doesn't really matter…it's TIME that matters and sometimes those things get in the way of the precious time. Love your blog and your home and your sweet influence. ๐

I love what your blog has become but I loved it even more when it included more of your day to day happenings and stories. Trust your instincts and you can't go wrong. I sincerely mean it when I say your blog has brought me great joy and inspiration over the years and I would hate for you to abandon it completely. You are funny, inspiring and talented and I look forward to reading what you have to say over the next year. Thank you and take care.

Hooray for you! I started reading your blog many years ago and sadly saw it change into what seemed a business. The tone changed as you have realized. This has happened to other blogs as well- and so I stopped reading them- yours was the exception. Many blogs now, because it is a business instead of just a voice for feelings/happenings, seem to be geared more to pushing products they have received. I am so happy for you in rediscovering your "roots". Enjoy your family!

Good for you! I've always admired the ambition of those that get paid to blog knowing I could never be that committed. I enjoy being able to show off the things I do around the house but have enjoyed the freedom to do nothing but clean it and watch my kids at their activities even more. Your life seems more interesting to me than the stuff you put on your walls. You are making the best choice.

Shell,
You know that people love your blog for YOU!!! Not just your super awesome ideas. Be true to yourself and who cares about the rest. I deleted instagram last year off my phone, started blogging less and it was painful…but I survived and am so much better for it. It feels so nice to disconnect social media, and reconnect family. My prompting also told me to quit watching trash TV. Which was REALLY hard. Have you gotten that one yet? ๐
Brady W. says
I have to be honest and say I stopped reading for awhile because of the lack of personal stories. I cringe to say that but that's why I love following bloggers–to see cheesy kid pics and vacations and read about brown sugar vs white!! Your designs are beautiful but your life is more beautiful! Glad you're rested and renewed! Looking forward to hearing more about YOU!
Christina says
I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND! I believe our current social media networking sites/tools have "ruined" blogs for me. (I'm always complaining to my husband about it!) I've been reading design blogs since 2007 and SO MUCH has changed. I miss reading real posts about real LIFE, real people, real things, which is not what everyone is doing today, sadly.
Thanks for letting me vent. I'm excited to see the more family posts and stuff about you and the family! : )

Way to go! I remember and totally feel the same way about blogging . When I started my blog 7.5 years ago I was so excitdd to tell all the little stories that happened daily noone was blogging for money. I loved reading about others daily lives and struggles . Then facebook took over. Nothing has been the same. I realized that I failed to blog my life for an entire year. My blog is the best scrapbook I have of my life.
I love reading about neat ideas but I also miss real people and real stories. I am trying to find my way back to recording the life I am living. I want to get off of facebook-it doesnt feed me, and just celebrate that which does!

I feel the same way about blogging. I have a blog where I love to share about anything and everything that I'm interested in at the time. One day it's food the next day it's makeup and I felt so much pressure to be tied down to just one thing. Seeing all of these big time blogs with sponsors and heavily pinned pictures (which, don't get me wrong, I LOVE to read) makes me insecure about going forward with my small time blog. So much pressure to make content that people would want to read instead of content that I want to write! Kudos for taking a break and reassessing your blog. I stumbled upon your blog because of your personal posts. I was delighted to see your home posts too but I really like when you share more about yourself. It's very uplifting ๐ Good luck with your goals this year.

I just sat and wept as I was reading your blog post today. It touched my heart because I could relate so much! At times I have recently began to feel like my soul is empty, yet my calendar is full. I too, long to get back to the "stillness" in my life. Thank you so much for sharing. Kim

Thank you!!! This is exactly what we all needed to hear and I am glad that I am not the only one who feels this way. I too and "Being Still" this year, even if it kills me. ๐ I'm not a blogger, but a reader and have found that I am living through other people and need to focus more on me and my family while taking ideas from my blogging family. You donโt know me, but you have significantly changed my life for the better. Frankly, I find myself more drawn to the blogs that are just pictures and posts about their everyday mundane life! So I look forward to reading your blog even more now! This year I have also decided to step back and say no to things that just don't help me a better me! I am always worried about letting everyone down and not worried enough about what I really want! I want to be with my kids! Enjoy life! And take care of me. Not watching everyone else's kids, or volunteering for all the school events! Mix and Match Mama did a blog post yesterday about learning to say no and not feeling guilty! Good luck to you!

I love this! And I sincerely hope you follow through. You put into words what I have been feeling about my own life for months now. I love reading another moms thoughts on travel, personal struggles, or even just day to day life. Your blog has always been one of my favorites. I look forward to reading your blog in the next few months as we all see you getting back to your old self. Congratulations and Good Luck!

I just want to say I like the silly and mundane! I have stopped reading a few blogs because they started to feel more like advertisements for products than short stories. Not to say I don't love all your design ideas but the family stuff is great too. I understand completely..100%…get it..I feel ya! I have done the same thing over the past year…I have another blog (crafty & design) for 7 years and traveled the US/Canada teaching art for 3.5 years..I was gone every other week. While I loved meeting new people & going new places I realized I was missing out on a A LOT with my family. Family is my main priority and my daughter graduates this June from highschool. So I decided in the Fall of 2012 that I was done traveling for work right now…I've been at home soaking in all the good moments (and bad) with my family. Preparing my daughter to leave the nest and just figuring out WHO I am and WHAT I want to do going forward. Its been a lifesaver for me of sorts and I hope you find it is so for you too. Good for you for taking the time, it certainly takes courage and a leap of faith but in the end the rewards of love and family are so worth it. Hugs to you!

I quit blogging last year because when your 4 year old answers the question "What does your mom like to do?" with "she likes being on the computer." and it's on your Mother's Day sheet, you know it's time to step away from the computer. I am not a "well known" blogger but even as a small blogger, I was doing many of the same things, worrying about numbers, projects and pleasing people that didn't live in my home who I didn't even really know. After not blogging for many months, I realized the same thing, I miss the very reason I started blogging, capturing family memories, my journal of our life, not worrying about what people would think when they read my posts but putting to virtual paper our life story. Thank you for being real, sharing honestly and enjoy that time with your friends and family!!!!

Decorating is fun, but it's not the only thing on my mind, and I wouldn't expect it to be onyours, either. I look forward to hearing about your girls and family time and all the little thibgs that really are the BIG things in our lives. Thank you, as always, for sharing your heart!!

Your post has me shedding a few tears. I remember blogging when it was much simpler time. After shutting my family blog down. I started a new blog. I try to blog, but feel I have lost my blogging mojo. By the way those photo's of the beach are fabulous. I miss living in Oceanside. Grew up there. I loved living right next to the beach. Each winter I get a little of the winter blues and miss flip flops along with the beach.

Shelly, I very much enjoyed reading this post. It's a breath of fresh air to hear this from a blogger. Everything you have talked about applies to you and so many other big bloggers out there – commercialisation has killed blogging at its core. The reason why so many of us first came to read your blog and others has been lost with sponsored posts, blogging conferences and advertising .
Not to say that bloggers shouldn't make an income from blogging, of course they should, but it's oversaturated, it's gone too far, so much so that reading blogs has become boring.
More of the honest, down to earth, unsponsored content, then when a sponsored gig comes along it has more impact and it seems more authentic. The reader believes it.
Anyway, good luck, I'm really looking forward to your new direction.

Bravo to you lady! Today truly is all we have, I never fully got that until I lost my husband a little over a year ago. Cherish the ones you love and at the end of your life you will be happy with that choice.

Good for you! I REALLY do enjoy your blog (I always kind of save reading your blog until I have plenty of time so I can go through it slowly and enjoy it). I especially enjoy your photography and the stories and photos of your girls. Frankly, I won't mind if you don't have as many diy project posts, though you've really had some great projects. I hope you'll continue your blog, even if it is more infrequent – I'd rather have a weekly post to savor than none at all!

I'm so happy for you & your new outlook – so many of the things you said have been what I've been feeling too. I also have trouble saying no and found myself overwhelmed because every moment seemed to belong to everyone else and I had no one to blame but myself. This year I've vowed to only take on doing things that I genuinely love, not worry about a schedule or keeping up with the relentless "strive for more" everyone else drones on about. Maybe with more of us taking a step back things can be more like they were when it truly was fun to blog. I wistfully miss when blogs were about real people just sharing real experiences and not perfectly styled photo shoots, becoming a brand and the need to update 24/7. I'm looking forward to having the time to enjoy reading blogs again and making more of the virtual friendships that began in those early days, so I'll definitely be joining you:) I suspect we're not the only ones feeling this way either – blogging grannies unite!!

All your funny, down to earth everyday life posts were what drew me to your blog in the first place anyway. Of course your house is gorgeous and I love seeing what you've done with it, but I support your need to scale back! I know you aren't the only home blogger who is going through similar burnout.

I have been following your blog for a while now and while I am in awe of your amazing design/decorating/organizing skills I love this post the most. I started my own little blog–I call it blog therapy–this last year after my world sort of turned upside down and I've found that by talking about my "real" life, instead of the "perfect" life we all seem to think everyone else has that it's been so liberating and life changing. And so many others feel the same:-) Here's to embracing life and the things that matter most. (and if you are in the mood for a good laugh and some commiserating then feel free to check out my humble little blog: morganhouseofmystery@blogspot.com)

A friend sent this post to me because I am going through exactly the same thing, and just posted about it on my blog! I love that you are getting back to your roots and what is really important to you. And I know exactly how you feel about feeling like the Internet will combust if you don't post something new, even though you also feel silly saying so out loud. Oh sister, do I know. Much love to you on your journey!! ~Angela~

This blog post is so refreshing! I like seeing all the projects but I totally understand missing the documenting real life stuff. I've always kept close to my heart that my blog is first and foremost about my family and the events and photos I don't want to forget. I'll do an occasional craft or recipe post here or there. And I get envious of bloggers who are bigger or get cool opportunities but than I remind myself that I blog to remember these days of my kids being young and there's no price tag for that. So basically this is my way of saying You Go Girl and I can't wait to read more random every day life stuff posts.

Just happened to have a few free minutes to check out some of my favorite blogs (which I haven't done in MONTHS!). Yours was the first stop. It was a huge relief to read your post. Blogging has changed! It's not just the fun, what are you doing today, posting like it used to be. There is so much more that goes along with it. So much that I don't have time for and had to leave behind. I've tried to get back on board multiple times, but every time I feel like a failure because I just can't do it. Well, I could, but I would totally be abandoning my family, laundry, house, etc! it's been such a tug-of-war for me over the past year. I love blogging. I love the opportunities and the friendships it provided. I love reading viewers comments. But it's so darn time consuming! So thank you for this post. To reassure me that it's not just me.
You look absolutely amazing, by the way! Like I said, I don't have much time to even read blogs anymore. But when I can, I always look at yours first. But the transformation you have made since I first started reading your blog (4 years ago??) is unbelievable! You should be very proud of yourself!
Enjoy your beautiful girls!

I read a lot of blogs and like most readers can instantly spot the 'I'm in this for the money' sites and no matter how pretty the glossy finished photos may be, there's always the knowledge that they are selling me a product or ideal. I can get that anywhere but genuine, honest people passionate about something they love, enjoy or even what they don't like so much gives a real emotional connection to a reader that can't be faked or sold.
I don't just care about the projects, I care about the people behind them because you guys are brave and strong enough to open your homes and families to the world. To that I'd rather have one sincere post or tiny highlights than an entire weeks worth of duty posts.
So be happy, enjoy life ๐

What a wonderful post this was! I think everyone has a little bit of the "too busy to stop and smell the roses" syndrome. And at the end of the day, when we look back it will only be regret that we didn't stop, not pride in the stuff we rushed around doing.
And as a mom I think it is even more magnified since our kids grow up so fast. I had this poster hanging over my desk at work to constantly remind me what EXACTLY I was working for:
"One hundred years from now,
It will not matter how much money you made,
What kind of car you drove,
What sort of house you lived in.
One hundred years from now,
The world will be a better place,
Because you made a difference in the life of a child."
And then one day I up and quit my job. Since it is true what they say: YOLO! And now is as good of a time as any to start REALLY living!
I wish you only happiness and success with the new direction of the blog!

I just posted today after a reader checked up on me. I lost my grandpa, had become absent and felt much like you did. Thank you for sharing this, as I think you have expressed the feelings of many people in "blogland". As a person who doesn't blog, because Im not a writer, or my life isn't exciting enough, or no one would ever read it anyway…, (all my own self-imposed complexes) it's nice to hear real thoughtful words from someone who so often seems to have it all. I'm honestly tired of reading blogs that are nothing but fluffed content to build readership, and thereby build advertisers. I understand all of this is necessary for people to make a living in "blogland", but I truly think it has been over done, and I am hoping that more bloggers will take the approach that you have and return to what really got them blogging in the first place. Thanks for being courageous!
Heather says
Good for you! I think it is so great that you recognized it was sucking the joy from you and took a step back. You know, the blogs that are about people's day to day, thoughts, ideas, recipes, and what not are my favorite. I feel like you get a sense of who they are in a way so much more than just always reading about one specific about them. Anyway, I so enjoy reading yours and you have such a positive attitude and light about you. You exude happiness and confidence . I need a little more of that! Thanks for the example ๐

I think you are a neat lady and will be visiting your blog regularly regardless of how many "wow" projects you do! I'm a little worn out with some of my favorite blogs with all of the "giveaways" and posts highlighting a product. I'm over bloggers "stylizing" their life so much that all it creates in me is a feeling of inadequacy. I like real genuine people, like yourself, that share a little bit of who they are to uplift, inspire and make me laugh.

I am happy that you have taken time for yourself and have given yourself permission to do the things that truly speak to you. Loved this so much! That was my realization last year and it was definitely life changing! As someone who has read your blog for awhile (even though I'm a far and between commenter! sorry!) I had noticed the gaps in the blog posting and wondered if you were rethinking the blogging lifestyle. My favorite blog post are the real ones with real stories and excessive instagram photo dumps! Some of my favorite blog post have become over sponsored these days, and I want people to quit trying to sale me things! We have commercial on tv for that! So if anything, know you have someone in your corner giggling at your pup photos and thinking how adorable your girl's hair looked for school and I enjoy it all the same!

I love this post! I have to say I've been reading your blog as well as others for years now and I noticed I was starting to feel frustrated. I couldn't put my finger on it but I think it has to do with all you just said! I know lots of bloggers earn a living writing their blogs, but I also realized more and more of them are beginning to sway towards the companies that want to use them for their benefit. I read blogs because I get sick of tv and all the commercials. I love when you talk about the products you actually love and use- not because someone is paying you to say so! You are doing great and I'm thrilled you want to go back more towards how you originally blogged! I love reading about what you do!

You go girl. I started blogging in Feb 2013, and I just now added Facebook links. Social media is such a pressure and has you hurrying all the time. I'm not the type to do Halloween to post the day after Labor Day, Christmas in October for November postings, or Valentines the week after Christmas for posting. I feel like I'm inadequate for blogging. Then I'm like slow your roll and enjoy the holidays and time with family. I'm trying to blog more about us, and things that go on in our family day to day life. More for my own documenting to look back and remember the good times, and to keep family up on what's going on. That's why my 2014 word is CLEAR. Clearing out the clutter in what interferes with practicing my faith, takes away from my precious family time, stands in the way of building relationships, or is just cluttering up our house (I'm a little OCD so it causes a little anxiety in me). I just keep telling myself baby steps. That's why I enjoy your blog, because you keep it real. I usually on stay caught up with you and two others because of the positive, keep it real posts. Thanks for being you, and enjoy your time of just being still in enjoyment of our Savior and your family!

My husband had a hobby, that turned into a small side business, that slowly morphed into a soul-sucking, weekend-stealing, stress-inducing mess. One day, after a couple of years of this, he did some cold hard math and figured out what he was getting paid per hour for this stress. It was less than minimum wage! We realized that we would much rather spend time together than continue this hobby/business. We sat down and decided how and where to cut the business back into the hobby, culling clients and leaving behind only a small portion of the work so he could continue to indulge in his passion without it taking over our lives. Things are so much better now – and I think they will be for you too. There is a way to work on your passions, without them taking over your life. Good luck finding that balance.

Love it! I am so encouraged by this. So many things I want to apply to my life. I am not a blog writer, but I have felt so much of the pull into the world of unrealistic expectations. I am printing out your words to look at often to try to get them to sink in.–
( It is not about being a good mom, wife or person… but more about how I approach and cherish each moment while I was actively playing all of those roles.) Oh so needed to hear that just now!! I only actually "read" a few blogs and those are the ones with the day to day journaling because that is where I always find real encouragement. In fact, I would love to know more about your struggle to say no. I always vow that I will start saying no, but then I end up saying yes before I even realize it. Please share with us how you conquer the pull to say yes! Thanks so much for sharing your heart!! It helped me tons!

You know, I'm getting the sense that a lot of bloggers are starting to come to the same realization you did. I can sense the change that is coming in the blogosphere, and I have to say, I'm so HAPPY about it. While I love to blog, I've never had the time/energy to devote to it the way I've seen many others do, and thus haven't gotten all caught up in the rat race. I used to wish that my blog was as "successful" as others out there, but now I realize that I blog mostly for me. And I think that's the way it should be, don't you?

Way to go Shelley! You're such a good role model for your girls. I do have question…Do you think a blogger can make full-time money writing about daily life? I sure do hope so since I would love to blog full-time down the road, but don' want it to burn me out. I've been reading your blog for a few years and have appreciated your honesty about your life. GOOD FOR YOU! I am so uplifted and inspired by this post. And this has been EXACTLY what I have been going through myself for the past several months, so it's great to know I'm not alone and others sometimes feel burned out, too. My OLW for this year is "Renew" – I'm making an attempt to renew my testimony, renew my spirit, renew my relationships with family and friends and renew my sense of WHO I AM. I even went out in my garage and played the drums the other day (badly) because I wanted to remember how much FUN it is for me just to do the things I love and not be so concerned about productivity or perfection. I hope this year brings you some new kinds of awesomeness! I think you're on a fabulous path and I can't wait to see how it pays off for you! ๐
