DIY Stenciled Cake Stand
Okay all you creative ladies, today I’m sharing a fun, easy stenciled cake stand project that I made with the Martha Stewart’s Craft Decorative Paint Line, by Plaid!
I’ve been talking on our Facebook page for the last little bit about how excited I am to start planning Aubrielle’s 4th birthday, and once I received the new Martha Stewart Craft Painting kit by Plaid, I knew exactly where to start once I saw the beautiful color line… especially those pearl paints ๐
So here’s how I did it…
I started off with a simple white candle holder from IKEA, and a 9 inch square piece of wood with a decorative finish on the edges, done by a router.
I painted the unfinished wood white, and applied a vinyl stencil to the top of it, once it was dry.
Then I broke out my Martha Stewart paint tools.
Let me tell you, these are TOP NOTCH. Honestly, the quality and design of the tools are really good. I would highly recommend them.
I chose to work with the Aqua Pearl paint medium, a stencil brush, foam pouncer, and an angled brush to lightly add a few layers of the paint on over my stencil. To avoid getting any paint on areas of my board that I didn’t want it, I just taped it off with blue painters tape.
The awesome thing about this new Martha Stewart craft paint line is that it can be used on ALL types of surfaces. Wood, metal, glass, ceramic, terra-cotta, and even fabric. It’s indoor/outdoor safe and even stays perfectly fine on glass through dishwasher cycles! There are over 150 paint colors in different finishes, like Satin, high gloss, pearl, glitter, and metallic. All of these new paints are non-toxic and totally safe to use around kids! LOVE that!
Okay, so moving on… once I had applied about 3-4 quick coats of paint, I started peeling off my stencil with a pair of tweezers, to reveal the white design underneath.
Then I removed the painters tape and let everything dry completely for about an hour or so.
Once it was all cured I took a piece of steel wool and went over the entire stenciled surface (much like you would with sandpaper) a few times, to get off any raised paint edges or extra bits, so that it would have a smooth finish.
My final step was to spray it with a clear coat, to keep the paint from chipping, in the future.
And here it is, ta-da! A cute DIY, simple, yet totally adorable for ANY party, Cake (or cupcake) Stand!
I plan on putting a thin hard sheet of clear plastic on top of the stand, with a bit of adhesive under each corner, to keep it in place. This will allow me to put small cakes with frosting on the stand, and I won’t have to worry about ruining the painted stencil, and it will be easily wipe-able as well.
Speaking of easy clean up, I have to say that I DID find myself partial to one particular tool ๐
The foam pouncers. These babies are a DREAM! 10,000 times better then those old-school foam brushes that you pick up at the craft store. These pouncers are easy to hold, don’t suck up a ton of paint, and clean like a breeze! Just pop out the sponge, use a little hand soap with water and you’re done!
I also love how you can flip the sponge around and use the opposite side if you wear out the other.
If you’re looking to try out some of these new tools and paints for YOUR next creative project, from the Martha Stewart line brought to you by Plaid Crafts, then you’ll need to head to your nearest Michaels store, because these awesome products are exclusively ONLY offered there!

So. Dang. Cute.

LOVE IT! Couldn't you just spray a "varnish" over the stenciled image? I don't know how a piece of plastic would work (crumbs underneath?)
but spray varnish is easy and if you put a "doily" under the cake? Just thinking out loud! love your blog!
