Finding the Strength to Keep Going - My Weight Loss Journey Continues

Friday marked 13 weeks into my new lifestyle change. As I head into week 14, I thought I'd share some more thoughts and a little update about how things have been going.

First, I have to be totally honest... week 11 and 12 were probably some of my most frustrating to date (well, with the exception of the 2nd and 3rd week... when I felt like I literally would have given my right arm for just a small dose of carbs). Remember my "awesome 30lb loss" that I was so proud of? Well, I guess that my body wanted me to REALLY appreciate it, because for almost two weeks after my post... I was just STUCK at that 30lb mark. :(

I was doing EVERYTHING right! I even switched to having fish instead of chicken or beef for dinners at night, thinking that it would be better and "less heavy" for when I slept and processed my food, ha! Matt (my amazing lifestyle coach) gave me the advice, on week 11 to change up my workout a bit, and do one day a week where my cardio went 45 minutes to 1 hour. (instead of the regular 26 or so minutes of interval type cardio that I was doing every time) in hopes of kick-starting things up again.
I didn't weigh myself until the end of week 12 and STILL I was stuck, only losing ounces, instead of pounds. Aaahhrrrrg!

I had been really swamped with all of our show shooting and family obligations, so I didn't actually go in and see Matt these two weeks. (big mistake) I just did a few phone 'check-ups' with him...and really, I was feeling kind of like a failure without his usual motivating words and healthy living lessons. PLUS, I had just posted about being so inspired and driven, and now my stupid body just STOPS consistently losing weight!? What the CRAP!?

I remember one morning coming home from the gym with a "this sucks attitude" after a just "okay" workout session, (you know, the ones where you don't push yourself as hard as you KNOW you can go, and end up feeling like you might as well have just stayed in bed and gotten the extra sleep instead?) when I met Cason in the garage, as he was headed out for work. He hugged me and said, "You're doing SO good. Don't get frustrated." Of course, it sent me into bawling hysterics. (in case you're wondering, this weight loss stuff can make a person QUITE emotional. Maybe carbs help absorb tears?, because I don't remember crying as much before. hmm.)
Really... he was right. I KNEW this wasn't going to be easy by ANY means. It took me 29 years to pack on this weight, and I was well aware that it wouldn't all come off in the matter of 3 months, but let me tell ya, when you don't see any change on the scale at the end of a 6 day work out week... you definitely start to lose that "weight-loss high".

I made a commitment. I was NOT giving up. I would just have to work harder and keep going. This last week and a half, I have really pushed myself and found my second wind.

(yikes... sweat much?)

I don't know if it was out of anger, because I'm sick of being overweight, or if it's because I'm naturally stubborn and I refuse to fail this time around... but whatever it was, I ROCKED that gym AND my body!... slapped it right upside the head, kicked it's butt and FINALLY yesterday, blew right past my 30lb mark!!!
Like a total nerd, once I got home from the gym that day, I snapped these pictures of myself on my phone, so I could always have them to remember how GREAT it feels, if you JUST KEEP GOING!

Yup... that's inner-elbow-crease sweat in the last picture on my shirt. That's how I roll.
:)

Some weeks/days/moments are easier then others. Sometimes finding the strength to give up the things I WANT, for the things that I know my body NEEDS, is really hard.
(especially during candy-heavy holidays)

Not a day goes by that I don't wish for a slice of pizza in place of that grilled chicken, or a big frosted brownie, instead of a piece of sugar-free candy...But it's the moments when you realized that you officially weigh less then you did on your wedding day, or that you can now comfortably sit on the ground and play with your kids better, that make all of those stupid cravings and insignificant thoughts of not being strong enough... just disappear.

Losing 3 pounds in a week will ALWAYS feel better then losing none, this is just a fact. But making the decision to give up or keep going when those discouraging moments happen, will have to be the choice that you make, when doing anything in your life that you FEEL is impossible.
I'm comin' to get ya 50... so watch out! I'm on a ROLL!
(it may be carb free, with no butter... but I'M ON ONE!)
*** Thanks for stickin' through all of the ridiculous self-portraits. Don't worry... in the future, you'll be seeing less and less of me... literally. (hardy-har-har). Okay... I'm stopping now.

  1. Good for you! Yes it is frustrating at times, but when you really get down to it and think about it ... if you keep exercising and eating right, it WILL come off. Maybe slower now that you've lost the initial 30, but it WILL happen. Just be patient and relish not necessarily in the WEIGHT that you conquered, but in how GREAT it feels to exercise! Your body literally feels more rejuvenated. If nothing else, do it for that, and the rest will fall in to place.

    I have been on Weight Watchers since mid August....Mid October I joined a gym...for the very first time evah!! I have lost 31.2lbs and its probably the hardest thing I have ever done! {Unfortunatly for me I need a pair of new shiney hips...so treadmills, eliptical and bikes don't really work for me, whaaaaa!! I have to weight train and swim so it goes MUCH slower this way!!}

This post reminded me....to just keep on keeping on!! Loved it!! Thanks for sharing and Congrats again!!

  37. Good for you Shelley! Keep up the great work! You make me kind of want to start working out. And I'm sorry it's been frustrating, our bodies know we are trying to lose weight and they start holding onto fat. Remember that you are also gaining muscle weight and losing fat, but muscle weighs more. Keep up the great wok!

  42. There's a saying: If you look as good (and dry) coming out of the gym as you did going into the gym, your doing it wrong! Those sweaty pics are proof you are doing it RIGHT! Good work! That is so long to be carb free! You should be very proud of yourself.

  43. Wow! I need my husband and sister to read this post. The three of us have struggled this week with the whole diet/exercise thing. I think the site of snow again and lack of will power is the reasoning. Plus, I think our menus need some revamping and maybe a bit more spice! Thanks for putting yourself out there...it sure helps motivate the rest of us!

    ReplyDelete
  44. oh Shelley, You make me laugh and cry! I hope you are sooo proud of yourself! You are totally kicking butt. :) Way to not be a quitter! You are looking FABULOUS!

  45. My husband forwarded me these articles last week after he had a wellness presentation at work. We also hit a bit of a "rut" in our lose-weight quest; sometimes knowing a possible reason why helps it to be not *as* frustrating. :) Way to stick with it!

  46. I am glad you posted this, I had about 10 lbs to lose, went to the nutritionist and everything. I know it's not a lot of weight, but I have had that same type of plateau...it sucks, but reading your post today gives me strength to keep going and make my workouts count! Thanks for sharing and inspiring!

  47. Shelly, that's fantastic!! I'm one of Kirsten Wright's BFF's :), Kierstin Laws (yes, best friends with the same name and born 1 week apart in the SAME hospital!! Craz-a-ay) Anyway, I wanted to give you a little 'Hollah' and tell you KEEP GOING GIRL! You look great and I'm so inspired by your work ethic. I want to be like you when I grow up :) Happy Losing!

  48. you go girl! And how does one look so BEAUTIFUL after a sweaty workout anyways? ... keep rockin' it--cant wait to see pics at your goal weight :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. I don't know you but I'm SO happy for you! :) It's hard when you plateau. Glad you got past it! Just wanted to say that maybe when you don't seem to be losing any weight, it could be that you're gaining muscle and muscle weighs more than fat. Have you been keeping track of inches lost? I've read that it is a good way of knowing if you're losing fat and gaining muscle. Keep up the good work - you can do it! :)

    ReplyDelete

  54. You're doing awesome! I know how frustrating it is, I started my journey at the end of the summer and am 80lbs in. I had "beautiful" tattooed on my chest as the milestone, and reminder. I read your blog and there are so many similariites in your journey. Keep going, you're doing phenominal. I'm going to be 40 this year...don't waste anymore of your life being the best you can be!!!

  63. Way to go Shelly! You are an inspiration. I have spent most of my life overweight & the last 10 years just flat miserable. I have 3 kids also, and need to make changes NOW before they grow. I am constantly disappointed with myself & the unhealthy role model I'm being. I have close to 100 pounds to loose, and find it just daunting. Thank you for these posts. PLEASE keep them coming. I saw something in your post today that I see in myself....and it made me feel like maybe, just maybe I can do this! You are a beautiful girl :) Julie

  66. Kickin my butt right now because I have had, oh about 20 conversations in my head where I go and write you a little encouragement. What do they say about the best laid plans? Ok, here is what I am thinking, about this time your needing new undies, yep I bet and it is feelin oh so good and I bet you can stick both of your arms down you waistband and I bet people are starting to notice, although some may be afraid to say because if you aren't loosing weight they don't want to hurt your feelings. I am so proud of you, I KNOW this struggle inside and out and you are kicking it's butt! That scale is just a number, it doesn't define who you are, you are doing all the right things for the right reasons and it will pay off eventually. Remember during the tough times, don't say anything to yourself that you would not say to your best friend, you deserve better! You're so blessed to have the love and support of your husband and others, you are a determined person, YOU CAN DO THIS, YOU ARE DOING THIS!!!! So proud for you!

    ReplyDelete

Ha! Seriously though I can't wait to post a link to your blog so they can follow you too because what an inspiration you are! I have lost 70 pounds this past year and BELIEVE me, it only gets better and more worth it. Congrats and know that people are out here rooting for you! PS- do you watch the Biggest Loser? I have also been SO discouraged with my gym-going because I have had a household of sickies (me included) for over 8 days and haven't been to gym ONCE...Trying to keep motivated and get right back on track once we're all healthy again (I was on a 25 day straight streak- which is amazing for me! haha)

Congrats on Conquering Your Goals Girl!! *high five*

  105. Thanks for the words of encouragement. Just what I needed to hear today. It's so easy to make excuses and justify not doing it. I tend to get easily frustrated when I don't see the results I want. Thanks for putting yourself out there and helping others know they aren't the only ones!

  106. Great job! I don't know what kind of diet you are doing exactly, but I am doing low carb also and I cook with George Stella cookbooks. You can find them on Amazon. It has helped my husband and I soooo much. They even have cheesecake and pound cake, which are so exciting to have when you haven't had anything so yummy in a while. Keep up the good work!

  107. Way to go!!!! I just started my weight loss journey a few weeks ago... and of course, these first couple of weeks, the weight has fallen off. I'm sure it's going to catch up to me really soon and I'll hit my first plateau. You are quite inspiring, Missy!

  108. You can do it!!! You can do it!!! LOL, keep it up ; )

  111. Just so you know, those self-portraits are, in no way, ridiculous. Woman, you are DOING IT, and you deserve to have some kick-heiny pictures of yourself being the awesome that is you! RAWR!

    ReplyDelete
  112. Good for you, Shelley! I wish we lived closer so we could be work out buddies. I need the motivation!

  113. I'm not a blogger, or usually a poster. (Okay..I have only posted one thing, one time, ever! And it was on your blog about the mushrooms growing in my closet. Eww...again!)

I just read your blog every day..cuz you're cute and I like your personality! I like your stuff too..but I like you better! (Sorry..maybe that's too personal when we haven't moved past talking about mushrooms...)

Anyway...you are amazing! My fav are the workout pics. I like that you aren't afraid to just be you! Keep going..so fun to watch your transformation!

    Love, love, love and mushrooms...

  115. I'm so glad I read this post! I really need to lose a little over 50 pounds to be at a healthy weight and I keep putting it off. You have motivated me ( a difficult feat)... Also CONGRATULATIONS!!! You look GREAT (sweat and all)!

  116. You are just way too cute! Stay on that carb/butter free roll! Way to go!

  117. I love all the self portraits! :]

  118. LOL, Love that last little comment, "less of me"... cute. Congrats, super happy for you. I'm a Weight Watcher girl,I know the feeling of a 2 week weigh in with no loss or gain, it can be a downer but it just feels that much better when you get over that hump and start loosing again. GOOD LUCK <3

    ReplyDelete
  119. You look beautiful. I prefer a sweaty glow to no glow at all! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  120. I'm on my own weight loss journey..or 'lifestyle change' myself and I know exactly how you're feeling! I hit the 20lb mark and have been stuck there all month! I think when you hit those bigger milestones you're so excited and then your body and brain don't connect that you still want to lose more..lol..so the only thing to do it stay positive and keep encouraging yourself. It's all about believing in yourself..you are doing such a great job! Stick with it, you can do it.. actually you ARE doing it! :)

    ReplyDelete
  121. I must tell you that this post and the one when you shared the eginning of this journey, are wonderful. Your words are encouraging me as I begin week three of the same journey. Knowing that others are doing what is working for them, helps. Truly!

  124. Congrats on the weight loss girlie. I tell ya, I know how ya feel. I have been going to boot camp classes regularly for almost a year and I have lost only 10 pounds. I know it boils down to my diet, but as a result of stress and non-stop kid errands, I fail miserably. I have got to make the commitment to focus on my eating and change it drastically to see results. You're looking great. P.S. I would love to see a typical "Shelley menu for a day"

    ReplyDelete
  125. Way to GO!!!! You are doing AWESOME! After I pop this next baby out I WILL lose the weight from this pregnancy (and the other three) I will do it! Thanks for the motivation!!!

    ReplyDelete
  126. You go girl!!! 30 lbs so amazing, your face looks thinner too!

    ReplyDelete
  127. Oh I could just cry. You have no idea how much I need this. I'm sitting here in my gym clothes after a completely ho-hum 45 minutes at the gym, and now I don't even really need to change because I barely sweater. I'm grossed out by myself and just have NO drive to keep pushing. But I will, so that one day (soon!) I can take some goofy, sweaty pictures too! Great job!

  128. What an inspiring post. I "started" a fitness/diet plan early this month and things have not gone well at all. I know my problem is that darn scale (and carbs, and sugars, :/) but if I work my tush off for 2-3 days and see no difference then I say "forget it", but if I see a good difference then I think "yay, reward time." It's never ending and it's so frustrating. I thought blogging about it might help keep me on track but it didn't. You should feel extremely proud for doing and pushing through what a lot of us can't. You're struggle inspires me to keep trying with mine. :)

  129. You ARE doing great, don't give up.
    P.S- I love your blog.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Great work! Im wondering since i have always heard that a "diets" dont work if you will be introducing in moderation some other carbs? I guess because an all or nothing approach is tough to live out long term.

Remember this is going to be your new lifestyle, always watching what you eat and exercising constantly!

Okay, I never do this... but visit my blog and if you don't find me too creepy, let's friend each other on FB and we can be weight loss buddies :) You can find me under Heidi Sonboul

  147. I'm so proud of you, your doing great!
Just remember, "Positive choices achieve Positive Results. :-)
You know most people are so aware these days of the significant increase of overweight children we have. Just think with all your hard work what a wonderful role model you have become to your children. My brother just lost over 200 lbs, counting 1,500 cal a day and then started exercising. I admire and look up to him so much!! What a journey it has been for him, but now at 54 he is the happiest and healthiest he has ever been. Keep up the good work, love and prayers.

I love the way you post and how real you are. Not to mention I love your style of decorating and you make me feel like I want to redecorate my house. Keep up the good hard work. I know myself as I just lost 38lbs., but gained back 7, and I am so stressed about it, that I am working extra hard to get those darn lbs. off....your post is a good pick me up and I will step up my work out just a notch too!!

  154. Working out sucks---I run---and I hate it---and I always think it will get easier but it doesn't because even though you are improving you have to push yourself every stinking time to keep improving...it's a vicious cycle...and your elbow crack sweat is nothing---my siblings (who run with me)love to make fun of my bum sweat--bum sweat!!!! EEWWWW!!! Like I said working out sucks.

  161. you go girl! I just have a suggestion for you here it goes why don't you put a pic of yourself with the weight that you where before and then right next to it a new pic maybe weekly or monthly just for motivation to yourself and others, just a thought.

  162. Thank you so much for sharing this journey. I am a nurse and I see people fighting these battles every day. I am so proud of your fight and your diligence. 164. Your blog couldn't have come at a better time. I'm on that weight loss journey too, why is it that so many people are on this journey and yet sometimes it can be a lonely battle?? anyway getting back to the point, I've been on off on off since Christmas losing and gaining the same weight. I love your photo's (sweat included) they have really inspired me to get back in the game for REAL and to document my own journey.... thanks you may have single handedly saved me from giving up!

  165. Cason is right- you ARE doing AWESOME! So don't let the scale take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride each week. STEP OFF THE SCALE!!! It is only one way of measuring your progress, and you know if you're doing well. Save the weigh ins for once a week or every two weeks, or even better every four weeks. I used to be a scale junkie too, and I know how tempting it is, but really if you can break the habit of weighing yourself too often and letting that control how you feel, you will be so much better off.
    YOU CAN DO THIS!!!
    Laura- a frequent reader :)

P.S. to the person who commented that they were struggling to keep to a 1200 calorie diet- it's a struggle because you're starving. I was slightly disturbed by this. Once you start eating "normal" again, the weight will be regained.

    ReplyDelete
  166. Wow, really wish I had your motivation right now! Congratulations, I remember how good it feels to see the scale moving down and clothes feeling better :)

  167. I love reading your blog. You are such an inspiration and so motivating. I love to see your pictures and your progress. I thought I would share something that has helped me. I am not a fan of veggies. I tried the green smoothie. 2 servings of greens (kale, spinach, romaine) to one serving fruit with 8 oz of almond milk (vanilla). I sometimes add protein powder. It is like a sweet treat. But no sugar...
I can't wait to see your next post...

You're inspiring a ton of women and in the process making them and me...smile! Keep truckin'. You know there's a saying "When you're going through H*ll,.....keep going!"

  187. Thank you, thank you, thank you! You are inspiring to me and I am going to go home tonight and do my walk away the pounds video! I have been fighting being over weight for about 6 years now and I just can not take it anymore! It is a long story so I will keep it short - When I moved from Salt Lake City to Ohio with my husband 12 years ago things were a little rough...I had never been away from family before and I found myself all alone in a new state with no friends and needing to find a new job with a whole new lifestyle...I found comfort in food and tv! When I found myself crying in the dressing room at JCPenny's because nothing fit I decided I needed a change...So I started Jazzersize, lost 40 lbs and felt great! Then I had an injury at work and put all the weight and then some on....I have been fighting it ever since...now is the time to start and after reading your post today is the day! My favorite saying right now is nothing tastes as good as skinny feels! Thanks again for your courage and I will keep you posted!
