Finding the Strength to Keep Going – My Weight Loss Journey Continues
Friday marked 13 weeks into my new lifestyle change. As I head into week 14, I thought I’d share some more thoughts and a little update about how things have been going.
First, I have to be totally honest… week 11 and 12 were probably some of my most frustrating to date (well, with the exception of the 2nd and 3rd week… when I felt like I literally would have given my right arm for just a small dose of carbs). Remember my “awesome 30lb loss” that I was so proud of? Well, I guess that my body wanted me to REALLY appreciate it, because for almost two weeks after my post… I was just STUCK at that 30lb mark. ๐
I was doing EVERYTHING right! I even switched to having fish instead of chicken or beef for dinners at night, thinking that it would be better and “less heavy” for when I slept and processed my food, ha! Matt (my amazing lifestyle coach) gave me the advice, on week 11 to change up my workout a bit, and do one day a week where my cardio went 45 minutes to 1 hour. (instead of the regular 26 or so minutes of interval type cardio that I was doing every time) in hopes of kick-starting things up again.
I didn’t weigh myself until the end of week 12 and STILL I was stuck, only losing ounces, instead of pounds. Aaahhrrrrg!
I had been really swamped with all of our show shooting and family obligations, so I didn’t actually go in and see Matt these two weeks. (big mistake) I just did a few phone ‘check-ups’ with him…and really, I was feeling kind of like a failure without his usual motivating words and healthy living lessons. PLUS, I had just posted about being so inspired and driven, and now my stupid body just STOPS consistently losing weight!? What the CRAP!?
I remember one morning coming home from the gym with a “this sucks attitude” after a just “okay” workout session, (you know, the ones where you don’t push yourself as hard as you KNOW you can go, and end up feeling like you might as well have just stayed in bed and gotten the extra sleep instead?) when I met Cason in the garage, as he was headed out for work. He hugged me and said, “You’re doing SO good. Don’t get frustrated.” Of course, it sent me into bawling hysterics. (in case you’re wondering, this weight loss stuff can make a person QUITE emotional. Maybe carbs help absorb tears?, because I don’t remember crying as much before. hmm.)
Really… he was right. I KNEW this wasn’t going to be easy by ANY means. It took me 29 years to pack on this weight, and I was well aware that it wouldn’t all come off in the matter of 3 months, but let me tell ya, when you don’t see any change on the scale at the end of a 6 day work out week… you definitely start to lose that “weight-loss high”.
I made a commitment. I was NOT giving up. I would just have to work harder and keep going. This last week and a half, I have really pushed myself and found my second wind.
(yikes… sweat much?)
I don’t know if it was out of anger, because I’m sick of being overweight, or if it’s because I’m naturally stubborn and I refuse to fail this time around… but whatever it was, I ROCKED that gym AND my body!… slapped it right upside the head, kicked it’s butt and FINALLY yesterday, blew right past my 30lb mark!!!
Like a total nerd, once I got home from the gym that day, I snapped these pictures of myself on my phone, so I could always have them to remember how GREAT it feels, if you JUST KEEP GOING!
Yup… that’s inner-elbow-crease sweat in the last picture on my shirt. That’s how I roll.
๐
Some weeks/days/moments are easier then others. Sometimes finding the strength to give up the things I WANT, for the things that I know my body NEEDS, is really hard.
(especially during candy-heavy holidays)
(especially during candy-heavy holidays)
Not a day goes by that I don’t wish for a slice of pizza in place of that grilled chicken, or a big frosted brownie, instead of a piece of sugar-free candy…But it’s the moments when you realized that you officially weigh less then you did on your wedding day, or that you can now comfortably sit on the ground and play with your kids better, that make all of those stupid cravings and insignificant thoughts of not being strong enough… just disappear.
Losing 3 pounds in a week will ALWAYS feel better then losing none, this is just a fact. But making the decision to give up or keep going when those discouraging moments happen, will have to be the choice that you make, when doing anything in your life that you FEEL is impossible.
I’m comin’ to get ya 50… so watch out! I’m on a ROLL!
(it may be carb free, with no butter… but I’M ON ONE!)
*** Thanks for stickin’ through all of the ridiculous self-portraits. Don’t worry… in the future, you’ll be seeing less and less of me… literally. (hardy-har-har). Okay… I’m stopping now.
Cristy says
Good for you! Yes it is frustrating at times, but when you really get down to it and think about it … if you keep exercising and eating right, it WILL come off. Maybe slower now that you've lost the initial 30, but it WILL happen. Just be patient and relish not necessarily in the WEIGHT that you conquered, but in how GREAT it feels to exercise! Your body literally feels more rejuvenated. If nothing else, do it for that, and the rest will fall in to place.

I don't know you but I'm SO happy for you! ๐ It's hard when you plateau. Glad you got past it! Just wanted to say that maybe when you don't seem to be losing any weight, it could be that you're gaining muscle and muscle weighs more than fat. Have you been keeping track of inches lost? I've read that it is a good way of knowing if you're losing fat and gaining muscle. Keep up the good work – you can do it! ๐

Kickin my butt right now because I have had, oh about 20 conversations in my head where I go and write you a little encouragement. What do they say about the best laid plans? Ok, here is what I am thinking, about this time your needing new undies, yep I bet and it is feelin oh so good and I bet you can stick both of your arms down you waistband and I bet people are starting to notice, although some may be afraid to say because if you aren't loosing weight they don't want to hurt your feelings. I am so proud of you, I KNOW this struggle inside and out and you are kicking it's butt! That scale is just a number, it doesn't define who you are, you are doing all the right things for the right reasons and it will pay off eventually. Remember during the tough times, don't say anything to yourself that you would not say to your best friend, you deserve better! You're so blessed to have the love and support of your husband and others, you are a determined person, YOU CAN DO THIS, YOU ARE DOING THIS!!!! So proud for you!

Anyway…you are amazing! My fav are the workout pics. I like that you aren't afraid to just be you! Keep going..so fun to watch your transformation!

LOL, Love that last little comment, "less of me"… cute. Congrats, super happy for you. I'm a Weight Watcher girl,I know the feeling of a 2 week weigh in with no loss or gain, it can be a downer but it just feels that much better when you get over that hump and start loosing again. GOOD LUCK <3

I'm on my own weight loss journey..or 'lifestyle change' myself and I know exactly how you're feeling! I hit the 20lb mark and have been stuck there all month! I think when you hit those bigger milestones you're so excited and then your body and brain don't connect that you still want to lose more..lol..so the only thing to do it stay positive and keep encouraging yourself. It's all about believing in yourself..you are doing such a great job! Stick with it, you can do it.. actually you ARE doing it! ๐

Congrats on the weight loss girlie. I tell ya, I know how ya feel. I have been going to boot camp classes regularly for almost a year and I have lost only 10 pounds. I know it boils down to my diet, but as a result of stress and non-stop kid errands, I fail miserably. I have got to make the commitment to focus on my eating and change it drastically to see results. You're looking great. P.S. I would love to see a typical "Shelley menu for a day"

Oh I could just cry. You have no idea how much I need this. I'm sitting here in my gym clothes after a completely ho-hum 45 minutes at the gym, and now I don't even really need to change because I barely sweater. What an inspiring post. I "started" a fitness/diet plan early this month and things have not gone well at all. I know my problem is that darn scale (and carbs, and sugars, :/) but if I work my tush off for 2-3 days and see no difference then I say "forget it", but if I see a good difference then I think "yay, reward time." It's never ending and it's so frustrating. I thought blogging about it might help keep me on track but it didn't. You should feel extremely proud for doing and pushing through what a lot of us can't. You're struggle inspires me to keep trying with mine. ๐

Cason is right- you ARE doing AWESOME! So don't let the scale take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride each week. STEP OFF THE SCALE!!! It is only one way of measuring your progress, and you know if you're doing well. Save the weigh ins for once a week or every two weeks, or even better every four weeks. I used to be a scale junkie too, and I know how tempting it is, but really if you can break the habit of weighing yourself too often and letting that control how you feel, you will be so much better off.
YOU CAN DO THIS!!!
Laura- a frequent reader ๐
P.S. to the person who commented that they were struggling to keep to a 1200 calorie diet- it's a struggle because you're starving. I was slightly disturbed by this. Once you start eating "normal" again, the weight will be regained.

Wow, really wish I had your motivation right now! Congratulations, I remember how good it feels to see the scale moving down and clothes feeling better ๐

I love reading your blog. You are such an inspiration and so motivating. I love to see your pictures and your progress. I thought I would share something that has helped me. It is like a sweet treat. But no sugar…
I can't wait to see your next post…

Thank you, thank you, thank you! You are inspiring to me and I am going to go home tonight and do my walk away the pounds video! I have been fighting being over weight for about 6 years now and I just can not take it anymore! It is a long story so I will keep it short – When I moved from Salt Lake City to Ohio with my husband 12 years ago things were a little rough…I had never been away from family before and I found myself all alone in a new state with no friends and needing to find a new job with a whole new lifestyle…I found comfort in food and tv! When I found myself crying in the dressing room at JCPenny's because nothing fit I decided I needed a change…So I started Jazzersize, lost 40 lbs and felt great! Then I had an injury at work and put all the weight and then some on….I have been fighting it ever since…now is the time to start and after reading your post today is the day! My favorite saying right now is nothing tastes as good as skinny feels! Thanks again for your courage and I will keep you posted!

For those plataue's change your workout and eat a sweet, your body has to be reminded it doesn't need to go into starvation mode. I can't believe you are hitting the gym 6 days a week. I am only good for 4-5. Keep it up!

You can do this! If or when you do eat something you use to love but aren't use to having, you will probably feel terrible, like pizza or sugar, etc. Unhealthy foods literally put me into a sort of coma, and your body will reassure you to keep on track. Best of luck, keep shedding those pounds!
