Our Home Tour – Laundry Room
Is everyone having an awesome long weekend! I hope so π
We’ve been moving from one project to another, and we’re startin’ to feel pretty proud of how much we’ve been able to accomplish this weekend! So while we’re finishing up a few things, I wanted to move right along on our home tour series, that I promised to post about. If you missed our last post, we talked about our front porch and entryway.
Next on our home tour, is the laundry room!
We may not have the fanciest, newest appliances or space for high end cabinets and folding tables, but regardless, we spend a LOT of time in this little area between the family room and garage, so we wanted to make it as happy, bright and clutter-free as possible.
Here are all the details:
Of course in true “House of Smiths” fashion we started with paint. Using the color Cyprus Grass from Glidden. It’s a really fun yellow-green, that has a sort of calming effect π The existing shelf in our space was the same color as the wall, so we just primed it, and then painted it it semi-gloss white, to make it stand out.
To give visual interest to the space we used some simple, inexpensive molding to bulk up the shelf and the baseboard.
For the shelf we just turned a piece of door casing on it’s side, nailed it up and then putty and caulked everything to give it the appearance of a chunkier version of itself.
For the baseboard we adhered a piece of corner round about 3 inches up the wall with some small finishing nails and then painted the wall white in between it, to give the illusion of having thicker, more expensive baseboards.
Our chic little chandelier was a $3.00 thrift store find. It was a bit sad when we first found it, but with a quick wipe down, a few layers of flat white spray paint, a super easy DIY cord cover and decorative light canopy… this little guy went from drab to fab in no time flat.

Like I mentioned before, this room is tiny, so we needed to make sure we were utilizing each and every space. But you know me; design can be functional AND beautiful right? So I created an ironing board hanger and “wanted” board that not only act as storage, but also decor! Over-sized glass containers house our soap, stain remover and clothes pins.
Project Links:
With a few other decorative items, to bring in a happy splash of color and a comfy rug, this space has really turned into a great little spot for us to do our laundry in! It’s no longer boring and cramped, but bright and beautiful!

What is the wall art hanging on the wall to the right of the shelf? It looks architectural.

You know it's funny, but the laundry room is one of my favorite rooms to decorate… Maybe it's because were a family of 8 and I practically live in there… π

Love the "Wanted" sign! super cute and functional. I'm afraid mine would have to be MUCH bigger

This is beautiful. I love the wood backing behind the shelf's L-bracket, rather than drilling directly into the wall. Can you tell us more about the rug?
The Domestic Fox says
Nice laundry room! During our rebuild of our home – a laundry room was a must – I like your ideas. The ironing board hanger…um yeah, gonna have to make me one of those! π

Looks like such an inviting space. Yes, I just called a laundry room inviting. The color is calming. I think I might have to choose a room in my home to paint that color. The chandelier is lovely. What a find.
The space is beautiful!
Iuliana@Hip2Thrift says
I pass these ugly chandeliers at thrift stores so often, but never think that some paint could actually make them look this cute. All the details really make the space shine! Love it!

Once again you have done it. It looks so good! Love the chandelier too! I just posted My Laundry Room Makeover as well. We are leasing a house in Calgary, so I'm trying to make the best of it…hope you would check it out! Thanks, Missy – lookiewhatidid.blogspot.ca/2012/09/my-laundry-room-makeover.html

This looks great. Ours is probably about the same size. We don't do fancy in our little space either, I just need to put in a new light and paint the ceiling! And maybe rework my shelves…yours are so pretty..I was thinking of making some cabinet doors out of plywood, I'll share when done!

So beautiful! I'm inspired to make over my ugly utility room. Maybe I'd get more laundry done, eh?

I really like the rug! Where did you find it?

I am sooooo inspired by this. It's so pretty you don't even notice the not so fancy appliances. Who would care…in a room like this.

So pretty, I love how you styled the shelf above! Our laundry is currently in the unfinished part of our basement, eeeww Someday maybe it will be finished and I won't tiptoe around afraid of spiders.
Jeannie-JB says
Love your refurbished Chandelier – who would have thought to put a Chandelier in the laundry room? BUT, my Absolute Favorite thing in the laundry room is the 'Wanted' sign – so imaginative and necessary {why didn't I think of that??}. I'm so bummed that I have a laundry closet and not a laundry room. On the other hand, after a couple of months in Gulf Shores with no laundry room/closet/etc., I'm not gonna complain about my laundry closet ever again!
Kati @ Housewife_Swagger says
this is soooo ADORABLE!!
LovePink says
Love this! I crave for the front loading, pretty W/D to really bling out my laundry room. But I think it's just a cop out for me to keep walking by by sad little laundry nook, unorganized, broken shelf, stashing everything in it. So I need to get on the stick and clean that girl out and pretty her up even if the W/D aren't shiny and new. There is a problem that I'm wonding if you have a solution for. The heat duct for the dryer goes UP to the ceiling! So from my dryer is this ugly foil duct that goes up to the ceiling. So not pretty. Any ideas? Thanks! Jaime

I love it! I just made a few changes to my laundry room, too, and it has feel similar to yours. It's amazing how changing just a few things can make a workspace more pleasant and functional.

Thank you so much for posting your laundry room makeover tips! You've inspired me to make my own laundry room more beautiful and "homey". Like yours, my appliances are old. But, with a beautifully accessorized shelf, accessories, and a re-vamped lighting fixture I can see the potential in my own laundry room. Thank you and many blessings to you.
Sincerely,
Amy

Love! Love! Love your laundry room. Mind if I copy? You know they say its the best form of flattery. What are the measurements of the ironing board sign? I see that the length is 21 inches, but I am not sure what the height of the is. Could you please email them to me at wagner332@charter.net? Thank so much!
